The Bible talks about Gideon putting God to the fleece test 3 times , but in Matthew 4 Jesus said "do not test God". Are there other cases of people testing God in the Bible? ... Under what circumstances are we allowed to test God ?

:confused

Jumping off a building and expecting God to save you is testing (not allowed)
Falling off a building by accident, and expecting God to save you is Scriptural and correct.

Gideon was hearing from God and wanted to make sure he was hearing correctly. He respected the Lord so much, that he wanted to make 100% sure it was the Lord speaking to him, so he asked for confirmation after confirmation. We may do that too.

Testing is placing God in a position that is outside of His Word and expecting Him to act.
Faith is placing God inside the parameters of the His Word and accepting what He says about something as truth, even if you cannot see it . That is not testing, that is what God expects of all of us.

Faith is believing God , not just believing IN God. If you believe God about what He promised, you are in His will. Even if people say you are testing Him, you are not, you are believing Him and refusing to let go of His promises. That is accredited as righteousness to you. The devil wants us to be fearful of trusting God, so he made up the doctrine of "testing God" and succeeded in keeping many Christians out of their inheritance in Christ.

Christians cannot test God in any area that has to do with the curse. (sickness, lack, need, captivity, bondage etc) because He already removed the curse. Now its up to us to believe it. Christians cannot test God in anything that has a promise attached to it.

Find the promise, and you may believe it and stand on it. That is what it means to stand on the Word of God.

8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.
"But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'
"In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curseâ€â€the whole nation of youâ€â€because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

Amen cornelius well expressed.

To purposely test God would be to purposely put oneself(for no good reason but to see Him work) under a curse or a danger and then yell for God to deliver. As opposted to the proper way which is to Trust in God and lean on His promises by faith even when you find yourself under the curse or in danger. Here are come examples.

right way: you have walked without full knowledge of the Lord for a long time and have racked up massive debt , now you come to find God doesnt want us in debt and you are repentive for what you have done to yourself when you did not know a better way so now you ask God to bring you into his will and to deliver you from this debt so you can pay it off correctly by His divine help and so you can be a better steward from now on.

wrong way: you say well God provides and you go and max credit cards, spend like crazy store up tons of stuff and then expect God to divinely pay for it all.

Right way: you find yourself sick maybe even with cancer you hear the word of God that he has bore this for your already, you see that he tooks stripes and you were healed, you see he promises healing to those who believe and ask without wavering or doubting and you have honest faith that His word is true so you go to him for that promised healing and believe he will do it in fact that he already did it!

wrong way: you read the word that God heals and you want to prove him so you think hmm how can i get sick on purpose so i can see if he will realy heal me? then you think well i am gonna go and drink poison or inject myself in aids tainted blood and then say God heal me!
right way: My foot slipped and i am falling off this mountian O NO! LORD BARE ME UP!

Wrong way: man i am gonna jump off this mountian and Lord you better save me you promised.

Here are a couple text that help me in this area. First, our needs/desires should be in submission to GOD's WILL and NOT MY WILL, as Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemany the night before calvary...

  • Luke 22:42
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me:
nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. KJV

Beyond the example of Jesus, we are given to 'prove all things', and this seems like 'testing'
though this is set within guidelines as in....

  • 1 Thess 5:16-24

    16 Rejoice evermore.
    17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
    19 Quench not the Spirit.
    20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. KJV

Do you really test God when giving tithes and offerings ?

In my experience, people who hold onto a gift they have been given, have no abundance. Those who are a conduit of blessing for others, have no lack.

It is the same with grace as with finances. If I hold back the grace I have been given from others, I will be poor. If I give freely and cheerfully, I will have enough! Test in this sense means ....try it out and see!

If a person is having a hard time financially, I always ask if they are being liberal with their giving...this could be tithing for some, or just plain old giving. If a person needs something that you have, then give it. If we come up short, God will easily make up the difference. He loves a cheerful giver. :-)

However, do you know that in the entire Bible, this is the ONLY place, the ONLY verse, where God directly and openly challenges us to test Him?

:yes
