This reminds me of my high school years when the craze was to build these for the potential nuclear war. What really put it into perspective for was when Dr. Sagan (regardless of his religious beliefs or lack therof) described the situation in about 1982. I was watching a program of his talking about the cold war between the US and USSR. Here's how he described the situation. Don't forget, this was almost 30 years ago so it is far worse today.
The US and USSR were like two people in a closed 10' x 10' room. Each of them has a stockpile of hand grenades under their chair. One says to the other, "Unless you disarm I will build my pile higher." The problem is that only one of those grenades is all that is required to destroy both of them so it really doesn't matter who has the bigger pile.
He went on to talk about what was expected to happen if the worse-case scenario did in fact unfold and there was an all out nuclear exchange between the two super powers. He said, "The total firepower released would be about 9 times what was released in WWII and it would be over in less than four hours. The entire world would be thrown into a nuclear winter killing pretty much everything and the land, air, and water would be deadly radioactive for decades."
Personally, if something like this was to happen, I would rather that I would be at ground zero than stuck in a bunker to die slow.
