Understanding the Holy Spirit Baptism

The “born again” experience
is being baptized into Christ’s church by the Holy Spirit
“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (the church)
… and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13)
In this experience, the Holy Spirit comes INSIDE the believer …
John 14:16-23, Rom. 8:11, 1 Cor. 3:16, Gal. 4:6, 2 Tim. 1:14, 1 John 3:24, 1 John 4:12-16.

The “baptism with the Holy Spirit” experience
is being given an anointing by Jesus Christ (as prophesied by John the Baptist) …
Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33.
In this experience, the Holy Spirit comes UPON the believer …
Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4-8, Acts 2:1-4, Acts 8:14-19, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 11:15-17, Acts 19:6.

Everyone knows when a person is born again, the Holy Spirit comes
INSIDE the believer.
Now, let’s look at the 7 passages where the Holy Spirit comes
UPON the believer:

”Behold, I send the Promise of My Father UPON you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem

until you are endued with (spiritual) power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)

”… you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. But you shall

receive (spiritual) power when the Holy Spirit has come UPON you” (Acts 1:4-8)

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled
the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues,
as of fire, and one sat UPON each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)

“Peter and John … prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

For as yet He had fallen UPON none of them. They had only been baptized
in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received
the Holy Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands
the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this (spiritual) power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 8:14-19)

“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell UPON all those who heard

the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came
with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out ON the Gentiles also.
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” (Acts 10:44-46)

“And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell UPON them, as upon us at the beginning.

Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water,
but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If therefore God gave them the same
gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ …” (Acts 11:15-17)

“And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came UPON them,

and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6)

So, we see that the baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs when the Holy Spirit
comes
UPON a person. These 7 passages reveal that it is called “the Promise”
of the Father, and “the gift” of the Holy Spirit, and is accompanied by such things as:
spiritual power, laying on of hands, filled with the Holy Spirit, tongues, and prophecy.

So, isn’t it obvious that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is a different experience
than being born again? It is called “the second blessing”

Born-again believers are encouraged to seek this baptism of anointing and spiritual power!
If it is required …
remember the Persistent Widow of Luke 18:1-5, and the Ask-Seek-Knock of Matthew 7:7-8.

Does anyone really understand the baptism of the Spirit?

Born-again believers are encouraged to seek this baptism of anointing and spiritual power!
If it is required …
Interestingly you show this same uncertainty by saying, ' If required ! '
A far better statement than saying that All should show they have the baptism by showing some spiritual gift.

How does someone with the gift of teaching manifest this gift, if not by being a good teacher.
It is the same with the other non spectacular gifts.

Born-again believers are encouraged to seek this baptism of anointing and spiritual power!
If it is required in order to achieve this … remember the Persistent Widow of Luke 18:1-5,
and the Ask-Seek-Knock of Matthew 7:7-8,
and especially Luke 11:13 ... “how much more will your heavenly Father
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

If it is required …
remember the Persistent Widow of Luke 18:1-5, and the Ask-Seek-Knock of Matthew 7:7-8.
I kinda' wish you had included the requirements for that baptism.
Acts 2:38..."Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire, (fire means empowerment)

Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Seven works of the Holy Spirit in sanctification
1. Transforms us - Romans 12:1-2; 2Corinthians 3:18
2. Convicts us of sin - John 16:8-11
3. Guides us into all truths - John 14:26
4. Empowers us to proclaim Christ - Acts 1-8; Ephesians 1:13
5. Gives us Spiritual gifts - 1Corinthians 12
6. Empowers us to worship - Ephesians 3:14-19
7. Leads us - Galatians 5:25

We put on Jesus by the renewal of our mind, body and soul through Jesus life, death and resurrection by which we can reconcile ourselves back to Gods grace and mercy through His Salvation of Spiritual renewal and Spiritual rebirth of spirit. We now have the mind of Christ as joint heirs with Jesus as we walk in the path of Jesus and not our own path anymore. John 3:3-21

Sin separates us from God because God is a spirit and can only recognize his own children by what spirit is living in their hearts. We have to renew, rebirth - born again, Gods Spirit within us in order to be called a child of God and see the kingdom of heaven. We now put off the old man (flesh) and put on the new man (Spirit), Colossians 3:1-17. We are renewed by the word of God and through the Holy Spirit teaching us of all things, John 14:26.

Acts 2:38,39 When we repent of our sins and ask Jesus into our hearts we are also receiving the promise of God that his Holy Spirit will come and dwell in our hearts and teach us of all things we need to learn, John 14:26. The baptism that Peter was talking about in Acts 2:38 was a Spiritual rebirth through the word of God. Some people think it is being dunked or sprinkled with water the way John the Baptist did and there is nothing wrong with that for it is an outward appearance to man that you have repented and received Jesus and the Holy Spirit into your life, Matthew 3:11, but Jesus himself never baptized with water, John 4:2, for the baptism of Jesus was for receiving the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) that helps us to learn all truths and to know the will of the Father, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12.

After repentance and the Spiritual rebirth, John 3:5-7, we are then baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire through that of Christ baptism according to Acts 2:38, 39, Matthew 3:11.

This is the Baptism of Christ for receiving the Holy Spirit that is different from John's baptism.

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

the whole house where they were sitting.

Hi Doug

When you are baptized with the Holy Spirit, you are complete in Him and lacking nothing. Colossians 2: 8-12.

Doug, all the scripture that you used saying "upon" is speaking of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The promise of the Father is the Holy Spirit, the agent of that baptism.

See this also.

The promise of the Father is the Holy Spirit, the agent of that baptism.
Sorry, Dave ... John the Baptist says in all 4 Gospels:
Jesus is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
"the Promise" and "the gift" refer to the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
"the Promise" and "the gift" refer to the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Amen brother.

The three baptisms are

The Spirit baptizes us into Christ. This is where we are born again.
The Spirit is the Baptizer. 1 Corinthians 12:13

Then baptism in water. This is for those who are already born again.
Man is the Baptizer in this baptism, such as John the Baptist or a Pastor or Evangelist. Acts 1:5

The Baptism with the Holy Spirit as on the day of Pentecost is where we receive power; power to witness, power to cast out devils, power to heal, power to raise the dead. Jesus Christ is the Baptizer in this baptism. Acts 1:5

These are the three biblical baptisms as taught in scripture.

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 1 Corinthians 10:1-2

Moses = baptized into Christ
The Sea = baptized in water
The Cloud = baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Hi Doug

Exactly, and that Gift, that Promise is the Holy Spirit and is what makes us "in Christ" and is saves us.

Remember, you're still in the OT dispensation. All four Gospels are OT up until Jesus' death, resurrection and ascension (See Hebrews 9:16-28). It's all in the link that I provided. Only then could the Promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit be given to all the OT saints still living who had put their faith in Jesus. It was due to them. That's why we call Pentecost the birth of the Church (NT). Until then, no members. Only OT saints who trusted in Jesus as the promised Messiah had to wait until His death resurrection and ascension to receive that Promise. Being "in Christ" before that wouldn't have provided what is needed to be saved. No "Righteousness of God", no atonement, no death and resurrection). It's the only time in history that one needed to wait for the Promise. Today, the moment that we first believe, Jesus places (baptism) the Holy Spirit (Promise of the Father) in us, thus making us one with him and lacking nothing. And all those things listed can now apply. That's the baptism that saves.

Why those who are born again need to be baptized in water? Did John the Baptist baptized those who were born again?

What about the baptism that Jesus said was coming for Him
... the baptism of persecution.
We too will be facing this sooner than later.

I see "the Promise" and "the gift" in "the baptism with the Holy Spirit" passages.
So, I see these 2 as related to this H. S. baptism ... not to being born again.
I shall post my handy-dandy chart which shows all of this in one neat package.

Hi Doug. There really no point in this discussion if you're not going to recognize the historic context. I'll leave you with this.

"Being filled with the spirit must be distinguished from being baptized with the spirit. The apostle Paul carefully defines the baptism with the spirit as that act of Christ by which He places believers into His body (Rom. 6:4-6; 1Cor.12:13; Gal. 3:27). In contrast to much errant teaching today, the New Testament nowhere commands believers to seek the baptism with the Holy Spirit. It is a sovereign, single, unrepeatable act on Gods part, and is no more an experience than are its companions justification and adoption. Although some wrongly view the baptism with the Spirit as the initiation into the ranks of the spiritual elite, nothing could be further from the truth. The purpose of the baptism with the spirit is not to divide the body of Christ, but to unify it. As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, through the baptism with the Spirit "we were all baptized into one body" (1 Cor. 12:13; cf. Gal.3:26-27; Eph. 4:4-6)

Unlike the baptism with the Spirit, being filled with the Spirit is an experience and should be continuous. Although filled initially on the day of Pentecost, Peter was filled again in Acts 4:8. Many of the same people filled with the Spirit in Acts 2 were filled again in Acts 4:31. Acts 6:5 describes Stephen as a man "full of faith and the Holy Spirit," yet Acts 7:55 records his being filled again. Paul was filled with the Spirit in Acts 9:17 and again in Acts 13:9.

While there is no command in scripture to be baptized with the Spirit, believers are commanded to be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18 ). The grammatical construction of that passage indicates believers are to be continuously being filled with the Spirit. Those who would be filled with the Spirit must first empty themselves. That involves confession of sin and dying to selfishness and self will. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to consciously practice the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ and to have a mind saturated with the Word of God. Colossians 3:16-25 delineates the results of "letting the word of Christ richly dwell" in us. They are the same ones that result from the filling of the Spirit (Eph. 5:19-33). As believers yield the moment by moment decisions of life to His control, they "walk by the Spirit" (Gal. 5:16). The baptism of the Spirit grants the power that the filling with the Spirit unleashes."
(Macarthur)

It's not receiving more of the Holy Spirit, as we are complete in Him and lacking nothing. This is just the filling.

Being baptized in water shows your public commitment to identify with Christ and therefore die to this world.

This is the pattern of the scriptures.

When you believe the Gospel message of salvation you are born again; saved, regenerated.

Hi Doug. There really no point in this discussion if you're not going to recognize the historic context.

Forget your historic context ... I'll just focus on the Scriptures.
You have NO idea of the difference between
being baptized into the church
and
being baptized with the Holy Spirit.
If you have experienced the latter, you would understand.

If water baptism was the means by which we are baptized with the Holy Spirit then why did Jesus tell His disciples to wait to receive it?

His disciples were already baptized in water.

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Acts 1:4-5
