I love verna. she's been a good friend to me, a real blessing. I don't know why she gets hit so hard with rough stuff in her life. right now, it looks like her daughter may never speak to her again. Verna group up poor (not in a bad way...close farm family, they just didn't have a lot of stuff), now...after decades of hard work, 1 failed marriage, 1 good marriage...I'd say she's well-taken care of (deceased husband's railroad pension, good house in safe area), but still of modest means. So...it bothers me, personally, to hear about stuff like this...her home owner's association put a lien (i think i spelled that right) on her house, for unpaid dues.

Verna didn't know about it until recently. She's trying to refinance and get some equity out for her own personal use (I'm thankful for that, personally...she really should get some $$$ out and enjoy her time...), and the loan company couldn't go thru with it because of the lien. Her brother is well off, maybe even rich, and he's offered to pay it all off, and she'll pay him back month by month. I"m thankful. I think the total is close to 2K (ugh). Other than that...

her church friends--who are like her family--are going thru it, too. best friend's sister has pancreatic cancer, not the best insurance, and needs all kinds of operations, etc. Please pray for Florence, too. I don't know Florence, but...she worked a job, went to church, and now...pancreatic cancer. She's going to have 1 marathon surgery (all day thing), and then start chemo. ugh.

The other thing is that I don't think modern america is kind to older people. Its strange, because there's a lot more older people now, than, say 50 years ago...but the treatment is rough, especially for the poor older people. Verna has some $$$, but she's not rich, and...especially since Ronnie passed away, to me it looks like -some- people have seen a vulnerable older lady and swooped in for the kill.

Honestly, I get nervous about this refinancing thing. I mean, her brother's in the mix, and he's financially savvy, so that makes me feel better, but...ugh. She comes from a different place, a different time. When she asks my opinion, I tell her: maybe you should sell and get a decent condo, see if you can get some money out of the deal to do your own thing, and just...live. Aside from her brother, most of her family isn't all that close to her. Her son is getting closer to her, and I'm thankful to The Lord for that, of course.

I dunno. an elderly widow of modest means is spiritual mentor to a "Schizophrenic" from a (now, recently) well-to-do family. I wouldn't say that we're in the "least of these" category at this point..I was, for a season...but we are in the large category of people who do no matter in 21st century America. Although my situation has improved, by God's grace, I think both Verna and I deal with being essentially invisible, to many in mainstream America.

Her health problems seem better. There was a lot she never told me until recently. I don't know if its because we weren't as close then or she didn't want to worry me or...maybe I was a lot more genuinely "sick" then, too. The new specialist has her on a special daily medicine for her kidneys. I'm glad they've finally done -something- aside from antibiotics when infections flare up.

Once again, I ask that you pray for Verna. And Florence, too...and Angie, she's Verna's close friend and Florence's sister. Thanks. :-)

Job 14: 1 - Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

This life is "full of trouble" and evil home owner's associations that step on people's freedoms. :)

Sorry to hear about Verna's troubles. Praying for her!

Praying!

Remember, Matthew 5:45. As a paraphrase, good things and bad things happen to everyone. I mean, life as a believer isn't all rainbows and unicorns, but actually a lot of suffering (refer to 1 & 2 Peter). A lot if not all of Jesus' disciples met awful deaths. Check out the tragic stories from the writers of famous hyms like Amazing Grace and Take My Life (and Let it Be). I Can Only Imagine is a tear jerker, too.

Praying for Verna, Florence and Angie.
Things are tough and we all need prayers for strength. May God be merciful to them.

hi. me again. i love verna, i really do, and...ugh. i understand that believers have trouble, too. maybe i should have phrased the initial post better...it was a quick post, so i didn't do sufficient editing. anyway...

my problem isn't with God, its with society. I think...especially in America...-most- people don't really matter. In my own life, I've found that my parents now "matter," because they've hit the upper-middle class/"well-to-do" whatever area (not middle-middle class, not rich). I mean...I'm happy for them, but it kind of...makes me see that the world I live in is rough and cruel. If they weren't "well-to-do," I'd probably be in prison or living in some kind of heavily controlled misery (forced psych treatment, poverty, etc.). Point there is...

I know Verna as a -person-. She matters to me, she matters to God. Never smoked a cigarette or had a drink in her entire life. Worked hard, obeyed The Lord. He's been good to her, no doubt...people here on Earth? not so much. elderly widow of modest means...whatever. as best i can tell, a lot of people see her as an easy target, even family members. she's spent so much out of pocket on her family that she might -need- to take some equity out of her home. not that i can judge her family...my parents spent $$$ on me, but...

her daughter basically bilked her for $$$. she's in her 50s, makes 90K per year at a cushy job. what's that about? oh, wait...Verna doesn't -matter- to the world at large or (apparently) even to a lot of individuals, her family included.

ive told her...when she's asked my opinion...to just sell the place and get a nice condo, use left over $$$ for her own needs, and focus on her church friends and the family members who do care. i dunno. every time she needs something done to the house and she talks about it...she's not a super easy target, but i do think she's been ripped off, here and there. happens to people who "don't matter," of course.

ok. thanks for the prayers and the replies. :-)

hi. me again. I think now our friendship is more of a 2 way street. I mean, she's older, wiser, etc., but I think she sometimes looks forward to talking to me, because I'm not local and she can therefore tell me things she otherwise would have to keep to herself. and...she always tells me how far The Lord has brought me, which is a huge blessing to me.

anyway...

the son's divorce seems to be going thru OK. he's getting a place from his dad, verna's 1st husband. that does verna's heart good.

ok. thanks for keeping verna up in prayer. :-)
