I love verna. she's been a good friend to me, a real blessing. I don't know why she gets hit so hard with rough stuff in her life. right now, it looks like her daughter may never speak to her again. Verna group up poor (not in a bad way...close farm family, they just didn't have a lot of stuff), now...after decades of hard work, 1 failed marriage, 1 good marriage...I'd say she's well-taken care of (deceased husband's railroad pension, good house in safe area), but still of modest means. So...it bothers me, personally, to hear about stuff like this...her home owner's association put a lien (i think i spelled that right) on her house, for unpaid dues.
Verna didn't know about it until recently. She's trying to refinance and get some equity out for her own personal use (I'm thankful for that, personally...she really should get some $$$ out and enjoy her time...), and the loan company couldn't go thru with it because of the lien. Her brother is well off, maybe even rich, and he's offered to pay it all off, and she'll pay him back month by month. I"m thankful. I think the total is close to 2K (ugh). Other than that...
her church friends--who are like her family--are going thru it, too. best friend's sister has pancreatic cancer, not the best insurance, and needs all kinds of operations, etc. Please pray for Florence, too. I don't know Florence, but...she worked a job, went to church, and now...pancreatic cancer. She's going to have 1 marathon surgery (all day thing), and then start chemo. ugh.
The other thing is that I don't think modern america is kind to older people. Its strange, because there's a lot more older people now, than, say 50 years ago...but the treatment is rough, especially for the poor older people. Verna has some $$$, but she's not rich, and...especially since Ronnie passed away, to me it looks like -some- people have seen a vulnerable older lady and swooped in for the kill.
Honestly, I get nervous about this refinancing thing. I mean, her brother's in the mix, and he's financially savvy, so that makes me feel better, but...ugh. She comes from a different place, a different time. When she asks my opinion, I tell her: maybe you should sell and get a decent condo, see if you can get some money out of the deal to do your own thing, and just...live. Aside from her brother, most of her family isn't all that close to her. Her son is getting closer to her, and I'm thankful to The Lord for that, of course.
I dunno. an elderly widow of modest means is spiritual mentor to a "Schizophrenic" from a (now, recently) well-to-do family. I wouldn't say that we're in the "least of these" category at this point..I was, for a season...but we are in the large category of people who do no matter in 21st century America. Although my situation has improved, by God's grace, I think both Verna and I deal with being essentially invisible, to many in mainstream America.
Her health problems seem better. There was a lot she never told me until recently. I don't know if its because we weren't as close then or she didn't want to worry me or...maybe I was a lot more genuinely "sick" then, too. The new specialist has her on a special daily medicine for her kidneys. I'm glad they've finally done -something- aside from antibiotics when infections flare up.
Once again, I ask that you pray for Verna. And Florence, too...and Angie, she's Verna's close friend and Florence's sister. Thanks.
