If this is the study that I think it is, then the results would be more symptomatic of gameplay than the level of violence involved in the individual games. The 'violent game' was just a first person shooter meanwhile the 'non-violent game' was a racing game. Racing games require much more attention, control, and focus to play than a first person shooter. The amount of violence present in either of them would be secondary to the actual aims and actions required of the participants. They should have tested it on the same game only having altered the code to add or remove the level of violence and nothing else to act as a control.

These studies are very hard to do. There are so many unknowns. For example, say you watch kids play games and notice that after some of the violent games, the kids act more aggressive. It is hard to conclude anything out of this. Here are some possiibilities:

1. Kids with aggressive dispositions are more likely to choose to play a violent game. So the game doesn't make them violent, it is just a way to separate out groups.

2. Maybe the kids act violent short term but long term, they are calmer. Maybe it gives them some release of aggression.

3. Maybe it is the type of violent game. Maybe Mortal Kombat gives a different result than World of Warcraft. So not all violent games are equivalent.

Basically, there has been a lot of study and some studies seem to contradict each other. That says to me that a lot of this stuff varies with the individual.
