Volunteer Opportunities
With Salam Arabic Church in Chicagoland:
- English as a Second Language (ESL) in Wheaton, Carol Stream, and Lombard. You can meet students at their homes, according to your availability, or at the Community Center affiliated with St. John Lutheran Church, Lombard, with appointment. Only conversational English is needed, and Mrs. Natalie Bishop of NID-LCMS Cross Cultural Ministries could provide any orientation needed. Textbooks are available for all levels.
- Mentoring new converts. A matching process will be used, according to age, gender, and geographical location. Bilingual Bibles are available.
- Friendship with converts, seekers, and new immigrants. A matching process will be used, according to age, gender, and geographical location. Natalie Bishop of NID-LCMS Cross Cultural Ministries could provide any orientation needed.
- Driving People to Salam Church in Lombard for worship on Saturdays at 11:30 am, and taking them back home at 2 pm. (Worship is held at Peace Lutheran Church, located at 21w500 Butterfield Rd., near intersection of Routes 56 & 53 in Lombard.):
1- From Autumn Ridge Apartment complex (St. Charles and President) in Carol Stream.
2- From the intersection of President and College, Wheaton..
3- From intersection of Roosevelt Road and Blanchard, Wheaton.
4- From Northern Chicago (Sheridan and Rogers).
- Attending Salam Arabic Church on Saturdays at noon and having lunch with the refugees and immigrants in order to encourage them to come to church and build relations with them. Also, help is needed with cleaning up after lunch.
- Worship Music in ANY language is badly needed.
- Driving People to the Community Center affiliated with St. John Lutheran Church, Lombard, every other week for the bilingual Bible Study there, Sundays at 6:45 pm.
- Manning the book table at College of DuPage for one, two, or three hours, once a week, beginning Fall 2009, in coordination with the Followers of Jesus the Messiah student club, a campus ministry that targets Muslim students, founded by Hicham and friends in 2007.
- Transporting Furniture: A truck is needed whenever furniture is donated. Weekday evenings are often the best time to do that. Saturdays and weekends are possible, if you take initiative for the complete project, hauling furniture from donor to recipient.
