Or did he? What income did he make? He encouraged his apostles to live off the land and hospitality of others. He told them to shake the dust off their sandals in places that they weren't welcome.

Jesus was a radical. He was rejected by the status quo of his time and was eventually murdered by them because he threatened to overturn the good thing that they had established in which they were the chief beneficiaries of the system.

Jesus was a wanted man. He was hunted, betrayed, caught and tried in a kangaroo court. If there had been an FBI in the Jerusalem in the first century then he would have been on the Most Wanted list for sure. There was just too much at stake for the Sanhedrin, Pharisees and teachers of the law. They had plenty of people willing to perjure themselves for money and to whip up the people into a frenzy. All they were waiting for was the opportunity to catch him alone and then to debase him publicly. They knew that the people would turn on him when he did not defend himself. So did Jesus.

This is tax time. But we are too eager to pay our taxes much of which go towards unChristian or questionable ethics. Early Americans refused to pay their taxes to a corrupt British system. Many of them were Christian. Disobeying unjust laws is not a crime according to the traditions of America and the Nuremberg Conventions, making it moral and legal to oppose insane laws.

I am not urging people to stop paying taxes, but we should ask where they are going to as part of our democratic right and if we disagree then we should either withhold that portion or work to changing the policies that we find disagreeable. Nobody said we had to be doormats.
