Was Ringo Starr of the Beatles really a star? Some have said he was not that great of a drummer. What say you?

He is not my favorite drummer but he was not bad. Opinions differ and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think Mike portnoy is the best :lol Right up there with Niel peart. ;)

He may have not been the greatest of drummer, but I can't imagine the Beatles without him. He fit their musical styles well. He actually did things drummers weren't doing at the time. Listen to "I Saw Her Standing There."

Also, over the years, musicians practically lined up to be in his All Star band. :yes

Speaking of... this is funny!

I have talked about this subject many times, on the Billy Cobham forums when it was up. Ringo was a Beatle drummer, he fit them to a tee. And he was also one of the first open handed drummers out there, what I mean is Ringo is left handed, but he plays right handed. I myself am right handed, but most of the time I play left handed, unless I use the traditional grip. So Ringo and Billy Cobham, and Lenny White are the first drummers to use, open handed playing. And when Ringo wanted he could tee off.

Aah, Billy Cobham! What a drummer. Yeah, he's been around. I've seen him a couple of times. He toured with the Dead for a while and was part of Bob Weir's Bobby and the Midnites. What a band that was too! Bob Weir, Billy, Alphonso Johnson on bass and Bobby Cochran on guitar and other members in and out. Whoa, Bobby Cochran was one great guitarist too. :thumb Mast people don't realize his uncle was the late, great Eddie Cochran ("Summertime Blues" and "C'mon Everybody" fame).

I'm gonna take two weeks, gonna have a fine vacation
I'm gonna take my problem to the United Nations
Well I called my congressman and he said Quote:
"I'd like to help you son but you're too young to vote"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a gonna do
But there ain't no cure for the summertime blues

:-)

The Who scored big time with that song.

Yeah Vic Alphonso Johnson lived a block from me for a while, he told me that it was his first apartment, with nothing but a mattress, on the floor. And as for Billy I was one of the top 5 posters on his site for 5 years, he always had the time to help me out when I had questions. Got into Billy when he was with Mahavishnu. I love fusion. Went to see Return To Forever's reunion tour last summer also, I love Lenny White, well really the whole group.

Very nice, Lewis!

I'm in the process of ripping some of my Santana CDs to MP3 and Love, Devotion, Surrender is on the list. hehe Of course, being a Christian, I'm not really into the whole Sri Chinmoy thing, but good, quality music is still good, quality music. :-)

Ahh Lewis, I'm left handed but play right handed, same with my uncle.

Ringo...well if he was around today he wouldn't be very good but I think he was good for the time and you can't imagine the Beatles without him.

He's definately not one of my favourite drummers, in fact I don't like much of what the Beatles did (but I appreciate their contribution to the music industry). I'm thinking more Neil Pert, Mike Portnoy, Virgil Donati.

Nick, Ringo IS still around. He has a new album out and toured the US last summer. :-)

I don't remember saying that he wasn't around....but he's not in his prime. What I meant was that if he was around in his prime with the Beatles.

I have that on CD and I had it on album when it first came out. But I don't think even Santana is into that stuff anymore. I got to see Santana in 1973, Neal Schon, of Journey, was with them then, and boy could he play. I still love that guy.

By the end of '73, Neal and Gregg Rolie had left and started Journey. Carlos told Neal he was too good to net be on his own. :-)

George Martin wanted Ringo, among other reasons, because he is an excellent time keeper. He isn't the best drummer by far, (Neil Peart holds that title IMHO) but he also was already a seasoned professional at the time. Perhaps George Martin also wanted him because he would not detract from the front men, John and Paul.

Neil Peart is not the best drummer out there, today, he is good and I like him, but he is not the best. Dennis Chambers is about the top drummer and I know for a fact, the most sought after drummer on the planet. Jo Jo Mayer is another one, but Neil is not the best.

Here's my lesson for the day, Lol :-)

I said Peart is best IMHO-In my humble opinion. I am content to leave it at that. My stating this does not require anyone to feel slighted. You may believe what you want to and I am fine with that.

So I'm assuming if you like Chambers, you probably like the Thompson boys, Tony and especially Chester. :-) Tony was a heavy hitter; even played behind Plant, Page and Jones at Live Aid, JFK Stadium in Philly.

Chester, well, he's Chester and he's beeeeeeen around! :D Anyone who can play with the likes of Weather Report, Frank Zappa Band and even Genesis, John Fogerty and Tower of Power is :thumb in my book. Hey, he even recorded with Rebecca St. James and cut a worship album with Don Moen.

Nice! :amen
