Wearing A Cross....

This idea popped into my head the other day.

I believe that many Catholic beliefs result in worshipping false idols such as the "The Virgin Mary". Praying to her and having statues and pendants of her, when she is not a saviour of any kind.

So why then is it okay to wear a cross around your neck? It is not the cross that has saved us. The cross was not unique to Jesus. It was a very common form of the death penalty back then. Many many people were crucified.

If I wear a cross around my neck or hang one from my rear view mirror as a "testimony" to my faith, is that creating a false idol?

What do you guys think?

It expresses as much significance to you as you take from it. So no, it shouldn't become an idol, merely a symbol of your faith. Well, unless you start to worship it, I suppose.

To be honest though, I'd think that a lamb would be more appropriate to symbolize Christ than a crucifix. To celibrate His life and His teachings as well as the resurrection and atonement of sin rather than focusing so wholly on His death with the sins of the world upon him.

I don't think the wearing of a cross is actual idol worship. When I wear my cross, it is not so I can worship it, but to let others know that I am a Christian. I don't pray to my cross, nor do even do anything but wear it. There may be some who worship it, I don't know.
It is very true that the cross is not what saved us. I remember a long time ago having a discussion with someone who said that if Jesus was killed in some other way, what would be our symbol. If He were shot, would we wear a gun around our necks, or if He were beheaded by a sword would we wear a sword around out necks. We never really resolved it.
I think it boils down to personal preference. No one has to wear a cross or put one in their car. Some people have a fish. If someone thinks it may be an idol, then by all means that person should not wear it. 8-)

I fell into the trap once of thinking that a person wearing a cross was wearing it as a Christian symbol. When I approached and spoke to them about Jesus they started screaming and fled from me. I've pondered on that event for years.

I know a lot of heavy metal singers seem to wear them. I guess to them its significance is something else.

Most folks wear it as jewelry. Some were because they think they ought to. It's a nice thing to have, but it's only important as you make it. Just don't make it too important is all.

1 Corinthians 1:18 says "For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."

Comparing the symbol of the cross with the worship of Mary in Catholism is like comparing apples and oranges. From what I've gathered over the years from being a protestant, we don't pray to the cross or worship it. The word of the cross (gospel) is indeed the power of God. Wearing the cross or putting one on the top of your church is merely making that symbol of the gospel visually known throughout the world.

Yeah... what you guys say make a lot of sense. I am not worshipping a cross just using it to show I believe his death saved me.

I do think that most people do not associate a cross with Christianity anymore. It is ashame, but true.

The point made by ChristineES is interesting. If he was beheaded by a sword would we wear a sword... or a gun... or a noose.. what if he was hanged.

Kinda makes ya think.

I wear a Cross to symbolize that I am a Follower of Jesus Christ. It's as simple as that.

I think they wear a different sort of cross - a 'satanic' one I mean.
