Were Jesus' disciples merely His followers or companions or His guards?

Seems in some circumstances they acted as one - guards.

John 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

So, yeah, at least in that case he was ready to kick some you know what for Jesus. That's all I recall, was there other incidents?

Was also looking at the scenario where they guarded him against the throng, when the children tried to come to Him

The disciples were sent without swords when Jesus was with them, and only told to take swords when Jesus was about to be taken from them. The swords were not to protect Jesus, since Jesus told them to put them away when they tried to use them.

Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
Luke 22:35-36 NIV

Jesus Himself was not in need of protection by His disciples. He could have called upon the Father to send Him legions of angels to protect Him. Before Gethsemane, Jesus walked right through hostile crowds, and they could not touch Him.

He went to the cross by choice. To redeem us. No possible combination of human armies could have taken Him there against His will. The entire universe was created through Jesus.

Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Matthew 26:53 NIV

Although they may have acted like bodyguards, it was of their choosing. In reality, God doesn't need bodyguards, be it human or angelic. Any entity that needs us to protect them, isn't worthy of our time.
