What’s in a Name?
“The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,†that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,†and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.†12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentileâ€â€the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.†Romans 10:8-13
What’s in a Name?
Why are you named the name you are named? Is it a family name? My son has my middle name, which I got from my father. Is it a name that signifies the hopes and dreams your parents had for you when you were born? I have a friend named Buck. He was named that because his dad wanted him to have lots of them (bucks - dollar bills, that is). Or maybe your parents picked the name they named you with because it was the name of someone they admired? I know of more than one sport watching dad that has have named their sons after their favorite sports star. Or maybe it it was just a popular name at that time? There were 4 boys named “Bill†and 3 named “Joseph†and 3 girls named “Sandy†in my class growing up. I am sure that are as many reasons for being named a certain name as there are names.
But consider Jesus. Why was Jesus named the name that he was named? The name Jesus (Greek) was a fairly common name among the Jews of that day. It is the same name as the Old Testament (Hebrew) name Joshua.
But that is not why he was named Jesus. The angel Gabriel was instructed to tell Mary (Luke 1:31) and then Joseph (Matthew 1:21) to name the baby to be born to them “Jesus.†Why? The angel told Joseph, “. . . You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.†The name Jesus means just that, “God Saves.â€Â
So what does that mean for anyone who calls on the name of Jesus as the Apostle Paul wrote in our lesson for today? It means two things.
First, that I, ___________ (insert your name here) am in need of being saved. Because I daily sin against God and against what He would have me do or not do through my thoughts, my words and my actions. Therefore, I , ___________ (insert your name here) deserve what his Word tells me, death in eternal hell forever (Romans 6:23).
But then, secondly, that I, ___________ (insert your name here) have been brought to know that I have been forgiven of all those sins because Jesus, my Savior, lived a perfectly sinless that God demands for me, then died an innocent death in my place and rose from the dead to show me that I, ___________ (insert your name here), am a forgiven child of God with heaven as my free gift, (Romans 6:23). Because of Jesus, my Savior, I ________________________ (insert your name here) am saved. Not maybe, not possibly, not if I try hard enough, not if I come from the right background, not if I do my part, not if I make my choice, not if I live a purpose-driven life, not any “if ... thenâ€Â, but will be saved.
Feeling anxious about your salvation? Consider Jesus and know that through him you are saved. His name says it all.
Jesus,
As you have revealed your name to me as my Savior, dwell in my heart by faith that I may always know the peace of your forgiveness, the joy of your presence, and the hope of eternal life. Amen.
