What 1 Tim 1:4 really says ?

Hi to all . There are 6 places where the word Dispensation is used , but one is very well hidden in 1 Tim 1:4 .

1) The KJV READS ; Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies , which minister questions , rather than godly edifying which is in faith .

2) The word edifying is NOT in the Greek text .

3) It is the Greek word OIKONOMIA .

4) This is how the last part of the verse should read ; rather than God's Dispensation , the ONE by faith .

5) How are we TO understand , the One by faith , means , THEN ?

MY COMMENTS: True, in the Greek it is "OIKONOMIA" which literally means "house rule." IMO, "dispensation" is a poor translation; "administration" is the word that should be used here.

A translation from the Concordant Literal NT is:

"..you should be charging some not to be teaching differently, nor yet to be heeding myths and endless genealogies, which are affording exactions rather than God's administration which is faith."

"Edifying" is from a slightly different Greek word, "OIKODOMIA."

So, good studying.

Well, I'll say one thing that it doesn't mean. It does not mean that genealogies are not important, or to erase the double negative, genealogies are important. This verse and Titus 3:9 often gets flung at folks like me when I bring genealogy into the doctrinal picture when one wants to dodge the genealogy question. For an apostle that supposedly did not think much of genealogies, it's utterly amazing that the NT starts out with a genealogy.
