What are your thoughts on modesty?

As far as clothing. For both men and women.

I think part of the reason we have so many sexually immoral problems in the world (especially America, as far as I know) is because of the way our men (and especially the women) dress.

If we consider how they dressed in the bible, we can clearly come up with a solution. Many might say that we live in a new time now, but I do not think this makes a difference. I do not think the principle changes.

Today, women, (because I believe the majority of men are more sexually attracted to women physically than women are to men) wear tight clothes. We have midrifts showing. The shape of their bodies are evident and this is a catalyst for lust.

Adam and Eve in the garden attempted to clothe themselves after they had sinned. But Yahweh, obviously not finding their covering sufficient, made robes (a coat called a kuttoneth; you can look up what exactly this type of garment is and see the history of it)

What we could call "pants" and "jeans", were merely undergarments up under the robes. The robes could have short or long sleeves. The length of the robe generally came past the knees.

Pants are split up to the groin area (what I believe is something shameful and exposes too much).

However, if everyone wore robes, the shape of the body would be obscured and hence lest focus and attention on a person's form.

And no, I do not wear robes (I want to though). This is just up for discussion. So I'm not pressuring anyone to do something I do not do myself. However, I think we could all agree. Some of you say "I can control myself", but that is hardly the case, because what about what you wear? Can you control others?

I think it makes perfect sense. We need new clothes.

I do agree that some clothing take it to far today. Not all of it is womens clothes either. I have see younger guys wearr their pants so tight its not funny , how they breath is a mystery to me. :o I remember back in my younger days the trend was Hot Pants for women now that was short, my mom use to say well why don't they just go nude and save rheir money. I remember how short those things where. Today I see young giris whearing bell bottoms that are called low rise , some are a little low and along with the belly shirts yes you can see their navels , midrfit and a little belly , but then at least the breasts and other regions are still cover. I myself like the long skirts which by the way are makeing a comeback , they are called peasent skirts. Have no fear this to is a phase soon the style will change once again , hopefully it wont get worse. Then again we can not very well command everyone to wear long robes though they would be comfortable. :)

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.

A person should not dress in a manner that may cause others to lust after them.

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Christians should make sure that their behaviour does not cause people to stumble.

I believe we should, as believers, always be mindful of being modest. I am teaching my children this principal now...while they are young. It is my goal that my daughter would be appalled at the very thought of revealing herself to any other than her husband. I am hoping that my boys will not only remain modest, but that they will seek a wife who also holds to this principal for herself.

There is more than just clothing involved in this issue, however. I hope that my children behave in a modest manner. I pray that my daughter remains feminine, and does not act in a forward manner, or speak in the blunt, crude way that has become the norm of our culture. I pray that my boys conduct themselves with a heart to protect the heart of the girl they may want as their wife...knowing that her heart belongs to her father until the day of their wedding. It is a shame that the beautiful courtships that should be are traded in for these cheap imitations that lead to promiscuity and all sorts of other degrading things...consequences of sin.

I believe that this is rooted in how we teach our children to dress. I am sickened when I see toddler aged girls dressed in a provocative manner. It is so difficult to find clothing that is modest for girls even a that age. One must be a seamstress, or by more expensive clothes in order to find them anymore. That is why I love the goodwill so much. :-D Oh well, that is another tangent...lol Anyway, it is my belief that a father needs to set the standards of modesty for his family, and they should be instilled just like proper hygene.

The Lord bless you all.

Although I agree to a certain extent, I really don't think that blaming sexual immorality on clothing is accurate. For a start, sexual immorality has been around since Adam, it's just that you didn't hear about it...and also indigenous people wear hardly any clothing (in their tribes) and they don't seem to have moral problems in their society.

Dressing in a lewd and provactive manner is not the cause of sexual immorality but it is a part of it.

Why do you think hookers dress the way they do?

The first thing Adam did after he sinned and knew good from evil was to cover his nakedness.

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Christians should be modest...

Genesis 3:9-10 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Look I'm not disagreeing completely I just don't believe that clothing is the CAUSE of sexual immorality. I've shown you why.

I agree with these words. Women have been raped and molested throughout all of the centuries, regardless of fashion. If we draped ourselves in long bulky bathrobes, I highly doubt lust would evaporate.

Lust is a heart matter. If a man has trouble seeing a woman in pants, then he has a problem...the woman doesn't need to wrap herself up in coverings to make up for his lack of control over his flesh.

Sure, things can be tacky and flagrantly sexy...but to say we need to go back to robes ....well, we might as well all join the Amish. Sound like legalism to me. No thanks.

Adam and Eve may have seen their nakedness and covered up but they only covered up with a fig leaf not a blanket from neck to ankle.

Dress? Stumbling Block? Plus every appearance of evil??

Any 'LED' Born Again Christian will know how to dress! Romans 8:14 All else is Quenching & Grieving the one who will not always 'strive' to 'Lead' mankind! Genesis 6:3

Just an after thought! But do you think that the Holy Spirit is being withdrawn on earth by some today? Take a good look around. We hear of the slaughter in Iraq, yet, what about the daily satanic slaughter in our own city streets? And, yes, dress had a part in all of this! Even inside of [all] professed Christian church's, huh? :crying: See Isaiah 3:16-21.

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Some women today dress with the intent to draw attention to their physical attributes.

They want to draw attention to themselves by "enticement".

The issue is modesty.

Dressing like a whore or a woman of loose morals is not modest.

I read somewhere in these threads that very young pre teen girls even under 10 were wearing shirts that said "porn star" on them.

Sad. :sad

Proverbs 11:22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

The bible is not a politically correct book is it?

Hi John-- But would you agree that respectable dress is subjective? I mean, the Amish would see me in a knee length dress and call me a loose woman for not wearing a long dress and the 18th century church leaders would see me in a long dress with my wrists exposed and subject me to the town stocks.

Who is to say what is modest or immodest? Is the sin mine when I choose to wear blue jeans...or is the sin yours when you look at me with lust in your heart?

Can you truly judge my born again status by the clothes I wear? Should you be judging me at all?

A former stripper would grow into her sanctification and I would imagine her dress would move towards modesty...at what point will you look at her and say, "Ah! NOW you're saved! I no longer look at you and LUST!" Surely this isn't what you're saying....

Hi, don't get the subject personal with me, ok?? That is not the way for me to learn! What I want is for the Holy Spirit to 'lead' me to do, & know, then that is personally from the Godhead only, OK?

It is the Holy Spirit who LEADS us is what I posted. What I (we) say cannot do the trick. He will tell [me] when I am being 'led' or not! I will know when & if I am balking!! :sad

We do not need to be worrying about what the Amish wear. I have always believed that the Holy Spirit was given only to the Born Again Believers! Acts 5:32

--John

PS: Did you want to know what The Word of God says about women & bluejeans? I do not think that most of the today ones are ready for that?? See Hebrews 5:11-14. But again, you look it up, it is the Holy Spirits Inspiration who LEADS, not my words! Check Deuteronomy 22:5

Hi John...please forgive me for getting personal. I had no intention of causing any offense. I am confused though...why would you lead me to look up a verse in Deut. that is giving commands of the law?

Galatians 3:26 says..26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 2:I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.â€Â

Did not Paul tell us in Galatians that if we live by one law, we must keep them all? I am wholly led by the Spirit and I have never had a check in my spirit when I pulled on a pair of jeans. I don't believe, in this New Covenant time, the Holy Spirit 'checks' us for breaking an Old Covenant law. IMO.

OK: One time. Christ states that "If ye love Me keep My Commandments" That is [IF] I love Him, huh? OK: Isaiah 42:21 K.J. tells us one reason for Christ coming to this planet. MAGNIFY HIS LAW AND TO MAKE IT HONORABLE. That He did! Hate is murder & lust is when also when finished is adultery. Or are these requirements done by you??? Check James 1:15.

Me again: Male and female are the same??? :o Dress was the post, right??? Now you switch the topic? Well, anyway, who wears tne maturnity material? (you know, having babies) It seem that you changed that subject also?? Look, if you want to wear pants, why not wear them to church too! Whatever? See Isaiah 3:18-21 & Isaiah 3:12.

Me again: Come on, read 2 Corinthians 2:4 & get real! Who has ever seen John here on this forum, (or ever in my life time) even suggest that I or anyone else, even the O.T. ones, became rightous by obeying the Eternal Covenant of the Godhead? You say that you are confused? I did not say that, at least not yet! :fadein:  You did! Do you see why I do not like to get personal??? See Titus 3:9-11 And the Hebrews 11:13 ones are DEAD [IN T-H-E FAITH]. That means that they were faithful until death! We are not dead yet?

Hay, John here again, 'i' told you that some are still on milk, and were not ready for meat? The verse was from the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost, and is not my penmanship. It is called the Word of God. Are you saying that Paul has now changed the Word of God??? A God that is the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever??? A Godhead that DOES NOT CHANGE!

You might read another verse that Paul was required to pen in 1 Corinthians 14:32. I say required??? Well, you must believe that the penman of the N.T.'s Word of God could be Commandment breakers??? Why not?? Maybe Paul lied??? By what law is he accountable for telling the truth??? Now, was he then teaching saved by obedience???

OK: Here is what Paul was commanded to pen.
"And the spirits of the prophets are [subject to the prophets]." In other Words there had never been another way to be saved than by submission to the Master! Acts 5:32, Matthew 7:21, (it says MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN HERE) And Paul in Romans 2:13 again says under Inspiration.. "For not the [hearers of the law are just before God], but [the doers of the law shall be justified.]"
