Re: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and

Probably the book of Romans. It really helped me to understand and realize that salvation is by faith alone, not of ourselves (so that no one can boast), and is the free gift of God. This was the most important.

...

elizabethbraddock: Excellent post; well put. I guess I could say something similar myself (maybe to include Philippians or Hebrews also).

Blessings.

The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning really impacted me. I had experienced a religion of perfectionism, thinking that I needed to do, say, think all the right things in order for God to find me acceptable. In a way, this connected with some distorted thoughts that I already carried inside me before becoming a Christian.

Ragamuffin Gospel presents a God of love, the Father of the prodigal. His heart is towards me, and he loves and values me not because of what I do or have done. His grace is sufficient, and his death on the cross cleanses all my sins. I'm invited to receive the love and pardon of a gracious God, as well as the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to work in me to will and to do what is pleasing to God. It's not my work in my strength trying to earn his favour. It's his unmerited favour, his love and his Spirit at work in me!

I also really liked the way God and relationship with him was depicted in a fiction series called The Archives of Anthropos by John White. Very exciting and insightful. Filled with portrayals of God's heart towards us. Also helpful warnings against deception, temptation and condemnation.

I am obsessed with Paul, so all of the books pertaining to him, I read constantly. I am also reading Every Man's Battle and really devoting myself to live in purity for Christ.

In the secular realm, I am a huge James Patterson fan and I have read nearly all of his books . . . Suzanne's Diary to Nicholos had me in tears. Probably the best fiction novel I have ever read.

I'd have to say the number one book that has changed my life the most(other than the obvious answer of the Bible itself, of course!) is Think Differently, Live Differently by Bob Hamp. It completely redefined the erroneous ways I had viewed salvation, forgiveness, and righteous living. It truly refocused my life upon the Source of Life, the Father Himself instead of focusing on my definitions of good and evil.

Well, it must be the Bible, first and foremost. John's Gospel, Philippians and Hebrews, I guess, particularly.

Malachi also, maybe.

And the Psalms 'of course'.

Basically the principles of joy and certain hope cut through the nonsense of vain, hopeless life.

The Psalms are awesome. Always seems to be something helpful in there, for any situation. When I was depressed they were the only part of the Bible that was really comforting to me.

questdriven:

Yes, there is such a huge range of human experience told in the Psalms, from the highs to the lows; firm evidence that God can perfectly sympathize with our condition, sin apart. Many of the Psalms are Messianic. 'We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities' (Hebrews 4.15).

Blessings.

I looked that book up on amazon. I don't think I've ever seen a book get such high ratings. I'm going to check it out when I finish the books I'm reading at the moment. Thanks for sharing :)

No problem. I figured if it helped me out as much as it has, I had to give it a shout out in a thread like this. I know you'll enjoy it!

I would have to say my first science book.
It covered so many areas and I found it very interesting, I read it so many times I learned everything that was to learn from that book.

Re: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and

Besides the books in the bible, I would have to say 90 minutes in heaven. With scientific research, I believe this is the only authenticated Dead Experience (not and NDE). Science says he had a 0% chance of survival. Science was right, because he in fact died and went to heaven. Science also says that it is impossible for a person to be brought back after a 90 minute lack of oxygen. Science was wrong, he came back by the will of God.

This book helped give me HOPE, and helped me grow my own faith at the same time. I mean heck, what an experience that would have been right? People say he was dreaming, but the "dreams" stop after your cells die in your brain (5 to 15 minutes after death). His story keeps me watchful for my future in heaven!

Inspiration and Incarnation by Peter Enns. It hasn't changed my life as such but it certainly has helped me see scripture in a new light.

Besides the bible I'd have to say...

The subversion of Christianity by Jacques Ellul.

I "happened upon it by accident" when I was a newer believer full of questions of why the church was I it was. The answers are so clear...definitely a master work.

Re: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and

Seriously, the book that changed my life the most is right in my "web page" on my profile. It's not my site, but the book is free for downloading or reading since it is old and free of copyright any longer.

The setting is late Victorian era to just post-Victorian at the height of the British Empire of nations (the largest and most powerful ever in history) and the rising most powerful single nation of the United States. It demonstrates God's purpose for ourselves and our nations in the so-called "Church age" and is a forerunner to the Millennium.

I like studying theology on the grand scheme of things and the purpose as to "why" everything is the way it is. To me, it's not about "getting saved", "improving my life" and "dying and going to heaven". It's all bigger than me, albeit I'm going to ultimately play a major role that boggles the mind.

I think in these days of terrorism and national disunity, it's a good book to take us back to reminisce in a glorious past, and to see God's hand in everything, and even the trials we are experiencing now are prophesied for our nations, and in the end, after much trouble, it turns out good!

Re: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and

"So you don't want to go to church anymore" by Wayne Jacobsen.
It removed the guilt from a decision to back away from traditional church yet not turn my back on Christ in the process. We are all priests in this world and church walls can hinder that. Great book!

Man: The Dwelling Place of God by AW Tozer.
Picked it up not knowing much, but was mesmerized by the wealth of knowledge inside. Outside the Bible, this is the book I recommend most to those who ask.

Interesting; I've heard a lot about Tozer, though haven't yet gotten into his writings.

Did you read anything else by Tozer, too? I think there are compilations of daily meditations by Tozer.

Blessings.

Re: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and

Farouk,
I've come to love Tozer's writings, such insight and depth. It was greatly beneficial to me.
Another one of his books, 'The Pursuit of God', is excellent as well.

Love CS Lewis as well, and Bunyans' 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners' and 'Pilgrims Progress'

Francis Chan 'Crazy Love'

What's some of yours?
I'm currently looking for a new book to dive into..

Hey, I love Bunyan, too! :)

There is a vigor and a warmth to his writings.

And I like the old favorite hymn by Bunyan, 'He who would valiant be'.

Blessings.
