In the parable of Lazarus and the rich man there are many symbols employed that clearly point to this section of scripture as being a parable and not a real depiction of the afterlife.

What to these following symbols mean?

The rich man?
Purple and linen clothes?
Faring sumptuously?
Lazarus?
The dogs?
The table?
The crumbs?
The gulf?
My father's house?
The five brothers?
Moses and the prophets?

Here are some opinions:

The rich man = Jews who were abandoning their covenantal responsibilities;
Purple clothes = symbol ofg Jewish kings who have presided over Israel's failure to fulfill covenant;
Lazarus = Gentiles;
The 5 Brothers: a subset of the 12 sons of Jacob.

RND,

If they will not hear Moses and the prophets, they will not hear the risen Savior.

First, the Spirit convicts us of sin through Moses and the prophets.

Then the Spirit convicts of the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, sitting at the right hand of the Father.
