What do you need in a good sermon?

When you walk away from a sermon and you say, "that was boring", what is it that makes a sermon interesting and useful to you?

What I personally like best in sermons is when you get down to the scholarly level stuff. This word meant this in the original language. Here is the textual context, here is the historical context. And most preachers use this stuff sparingly if at all. But to me that is the best way to learn what Scripture really says.
That said, I do not want it to be textbook dry and dull either.

I myself like a mixture of scholarly stuff and preaching Jesus and what he said and did.

It's a difficult balance I think, when my mum came to church she just did not get it, it was too intelligent. Yet when my wife and I talk about Jesus she can engage and does.

We had an evangelist who was asked to join our church a few years ago. His first sermon was so so refreshing. He preached Jesus, not theology and he continues to do so. He preaches how Jesus came for the lost, the broken hearted, the dregs the outcasts and he seems relate Jesus to the people he is preaching to. I love that.

I don't know if any of you have ever watched Ben Hur, one of my favourite films. Whenever I'm struggling God always says to me "Come back to Jesus, focus on Jesus" a few years ago I was really struggling and I went to see a theatre production, only 3 people doing Ben Hur. When it got to the part where Judah Ben-Hur see Jesus crucified and he sees the truth I felt the Holy Spirt say to me "It's all about Jesus, bring back your focus on him"

When I do that I seem to,settle in my spirit and find it so much easier to come before God.

I do study as quesrdriven likes but I do that in my own time. At times it does my head in and I lose my head up my backside but having said that at times it really really has helped me.

So to me a sermon that preaches Jesus, his mission, his death and resurrection I would listen to every week.

Sorry Jethro if my little interlude detracts from your post.
