what does king david say happens when someone dies ?
(Scripture of / from a "man after Yhwh's Own Heart" )

Psalm 49:17-21
Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

17 (16) Don’t be afraid when someone gets rich,
when the wealth of his family grows.
18 (17) For when he dies, he won’t take it with him;
his wealth will not go down after him.
19 (18) True, while he lived, he thought himself happy —
people praise you when you do well for yourself —
20 (19) but he will join his ancestors’ generations
and never again see light.
21 (20) People, even rich ones, can fail to grasp
that, like animals, they will die.

The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. Luke 16:22 NIV

God breathed life into us, Genesis 2:7, and when this flesh body dies that spirit of life that was breathed in us will be the only thing that will go back to God, Ecclesiastics 12:7. This fleshly body will return to the dust of the ground from where it came from until those who have died that are in Christ are resurrected to meet Jesus in the clouds if we are Spiritually reborn again, John 3:1-6; 1Corinthians 15:52; 1Thessalonians 4:13-18, or those who rejected God are resurrected to stand in Gods judgement, Rev 20:11-15. According to John 3:13 no one has ever ascended into heaven other than Christ as we all sleep until the coming of the Lord.

So do you believe in soul sleep?Do you think the soul remains with the body in the grave until we are resurrected with Christ?

If the born again believer goes straight to heaven after they die, who or what is being resurrected at the resurrection of the dead in Christ?

2Sa 12:22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
2Sa 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

David knew some day he would be reunited with his son.

The soul goes immediately to heaven or to hades depending on their salvation. The body remains in the grave until it is resurrected with Christ.

There is no such thing as soul sleep for when we die that breath of God that made us a living soul/spirit goes back to God who gave it. Flesh and bones will turn to dust and nowhere in scripture does it say what we will look like when we are resurrected and go to be with the Lord in the New Jerusalem other than we will be like Him.

Why does the body need to be resurrected if the saints are already with the Lord?

I've thought about this, and while it is admittedly pure conjecture, this is what I have pieced together.

Even now, we are said to be seated with Christ, scripture. When a believer dies in the flesh. I think he goes immediately to be with the Lord. I don't think it is heaven at this point. All of the testimonies that I have ever heard where people get caught up in the third heaven (or wherever) and they go have their spiritual experience, visit their dead relatives or wot-not, they never describe anyone not being flesh and blood (appearance), except perhaps Jesus and Angels.

I don't think this is some sort of split situation where some sleep and some go elsewhere. Everyone's consciousness goes to be with the Lord (if you're saved!). They're not in heaven, though it is a 'heavenly' place. They are not changed, that takes place later at the resurrection, where all are resurrected, to life or condemnation. It is then that we will be changed in the twinkling of an eye and become clothed with our spiritual oiketerion, along with the rest of our brothers and sisters.

Think about peoples near death experiences. Their body dies, but their consciousness goes to the Lord (or one of His workers (Angels) in some cases). Sometimes they are asked if they want to return, sometimes they are told they must return...then their consciousness returns to their body and they 'come back to life'.

We're just learning about how the spiritual realm works. But according to scripture, we are seated with Christ, even now as we chat on the computer here on earth. So apparently, spirits are able to be in at least two places at once somehow. While I don't understand it, it sort of makes sense in that, the Lord is testified of to be visiting His people at times, and also hearing all of their prayers. There's a lot of people, so it's reasonable to assume that the visitations are not one at a time. I believe this, though the actual mechanics of it have yet to be revealed to us.

The Bible isn't totally clear about whether we go to some sort of grave and are dead and unaware of everything until the ressurrection at Christ's second coming revives us, or whether we go straight to heaven.
But I tend to believe in soul sleep rather than "straight to heaven". I'm not very opinionated about it, though.

I knew I shouldn't have used that word. Believers. Why does the body need to be resurrected if the believers are already with the Lord?

You know I don't think we have a clear scripture that tells us. Except when Paul said that to be absent from the body was to be present with the Lord.
That word 'sleep' doesn't necessary mean sleep as we think of it. 'Sleep' and other forms of the word are often used metaphorically to just mean died or dead.

For instance....
Act 13:36 for David, indeed, his own generation having served by the will of God, did fall asleep, and was added unto his fathers, and saw corruption,
1Co 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

I would suggest reading Thayer's Lexicon and Vine's, Vine's is very good I think. At this link you will see where you can click on Vine's and read Thayer's as well. You may already have used this resource. In my view, it can't hurt to see what the Greek and Hebrew meanings are and how words were used in that time and culture when the Bible was written.
