What does it mean to be delivered?

Dave...

Salvation, or to be saved, carries the idea of being delivered. What does it mean to be delivered? Delivered from what? And how does this happen?

D

When saved one is delivered from bondage to sin, one is delivered from death, one is delivered from eternal punishment with the devil and the devil's angels, one is delivered from an unabundant life, one is delievered from the world and the deceptions that are against almighty God.

That was from the top of my head, now I will post some scripture references to the word delivered:

Romans 7:6
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Romans 8:21
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Romans 15:31
That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

2 Corinthians 1:10
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

2 Corinthians 4:11
For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

Colossians 1:13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

1 Thessalonians 1:10
And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

2 1 Thessalonians 3:2
And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

2 Timothy 3:11
Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

2 Timothy 4:17
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

2 Peter 2:7
And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

Good post.

Delivered from sin (Matthew 1:21, 1 John 3:5), from Satan (Hebrews 2:14-15), from wrath (Romans 5:9, 1 Thessalonians 1:10), this present evil world (Galatians 1:4), from enemies (Luke 71-74), and from error to truth (John 17:17).

Anyways, how are we delivered? Are we delivered from error to truth before we are delivered from sin to righteousness? I'm going to ramble on here with out any particular direction other than to try to bring it all together. There is no possible way to post all the scripture, or remember it all for that matter.

What is truth?

Jesus is the truth

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The truth came through Jesus

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Revealed by the Holy Spirit

John 14:17 The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

God's Word is the truth, the true Gospel, that has power to free you from your enslavement to sin.

John 8:32-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

2 Corinthians 2:12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened to me by the Lord,

The true Gospel is truth that saves

2 Timothy 1:9-10 Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, But has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, (Also Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 1:18, 1 Thessalonians 1:5)

The Gospel is the Word of God (1 thessalonians 2:13), the Word of Christ Colossians3:16, the Word of Grace (Acts 14:3, Acts 20:32), Word of salvation (Acts 13:26), Word of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:19), Word of truth (Ephessians 1:13, James 1:18), Word of faith (Romans 10:18), word of life (Philippians 2:16)

The true gospel must be believed

Mark 1:15 And saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (Also Hebrews 4:2)

The true Gospel (truth) sanctifies

John 17:17, 19 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. ... And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

The true Gospel (truth) purifies

1 Peter 1:22-23 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

The truth is our armour

Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Since it is only a true Gospel that can save and preaching the true Gospel is the appointed means...

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

So...

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

So you know the true Gospel, and remember...

Galations 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

The result of hearing the true gospel is faith

Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Delivered through faith in Jesus Christ (Mark 16:16, Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9, Ephesians 2:8, 1 Peter 1:5), in Jesus Christ alone (Acts 4:12)

Confession necessary for deliverance/salvation

Romans 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (By Grace)

Regeneration necessary for deliverance/salvation

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (By Grace)

Perseverance necessary for deliverance/salvation

Matthew 10:22 And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. (By Grace)

I'm tired. :-?

BTW

The Gospel (truth) is hid to them that are lost

2 Corinthians 4:3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,

The wicked turn away from the truth

2 Timothy 4:4 And they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

The wicked resist the truth

2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;

The wicked destitute of

1 Timothy 6:5 Useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

Remember when Jesus said that 'He would tell them the truth, but that they would not listen.' (Can't remember where the scripture is)

Blinded to the true Gospel

2 Corinthians 4:4 Whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

Amazing how it all filters through God's Word.

Some questions that jump out at me are...

Where does repentance fit into this picture? Jesus said, "Repent and believe". Is repentance a side show, or is it a necessary element in our deliverance?

Everything starts with the true Gospel of Jesus Christ through God's Word, but what about those who the truth is veiled from? Who are blind? Aren't all unsaved people blind? How do they hear the Gospel and understand it then so they can have faith? If they don't understand it, how will they know to repent?

All the things needed come from hearing and obeying God's Word. Faith comes by hearing the true Gospel, regeneration, etc.

If I have time, tomorrow i'll add to this. If you know some of the answers, be my guest. I'd appreciate it.

Very important
Faith in something other than the true Gospel cannot, and will not save.

What does being delivered mean or what could it mean?

I too would like an answer to that but maybe I mean something different?
I know being delivered from sin, repenting, asking Jesus into your heart is being saved and becoming a child of God but what about being delivered from something specific like addiction to drugs, or cigarettes, or gambling or such as that. I know for myself that even after I repented through the Holy Spirit bidding me to come to Jesus and I was saved, I still had specific problems I needed to deal with. Some people I spoke to said I needed to be "delivered" and had a special prayer session over me for that particular thing. Is this a truth, or was this just some man's idea? Not making fun just trying to find out somethings. Thanks for all comments.

Hey Jack.

I think that we will all be repenting until the day we die. The Holy Sprit will be revealing our sin to us for the rest of our lives.

It's a good thing that you are concerned. The Holy Spirit will convict you like that. Macarthur once said that sin for a believer is a burden which afflicts him rather than a pleasure that delights him. That was well stated and this is the difference between a saved person and one who is not.

Who did Jesus say was justified before God? The one who said 'I thank you Lord, that i am not a sinner like that man over there', or the man who said 'Forgive me Lord, i'm a sinner'?

Jack, the more you become grounded as a believer and mature as a Christian, the more you will realise just how sinful we all really are, and more importantly how sinful you are. Paul said something to the effect of 'Oh, wreched man am I. This is part of being spiritually mature. You can repent from everything you can think of, and still see how short that we come to establishing our own righteousness. We simply can't. That's why we we need the righteousness of God through faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

You know what you need to do, right? If you are struggling, ask in prayer for help. Don't set yourself up for the fall either. If you have problems with alcohol, don't hang out at bars or keep it in your home, etc. Get rid of all temptations.

Prayer is never a bad thing when it is done with an honest heart, but I think that I know what you are describing. You are questioning it for good reason if my guess is right. You know the difference between honest prayer through people that are truly concerned, and those who try to apply some magical remedy to prove that they are more spiritual than the rest, right?

We'll never be sinless while we're here, but that's not an excuse to continue in sin either.

Paul said: Romans 6:1-23

Gotta go, i'm short on time today.

Peace

Just trying to find out some answers about deliverence?

Thanks so much Dave for the comments and suggestions. I'm learning quickly that Jesus works through other christians. I do believe you understood exactly what I was trying to say and I thank you for your common sense answer. Your gift must be encouragement and teaching, probably among others.
I particulary liked the statement about the Holy Spirit letting me know in my spirit when something I do is not pleasing to God. And yes if I do have a specific temptation not hanging at those places and such is exactly what I should be paying attention to.
I have yet to find a home church. I have been going here and there trying to see where I felt most at home and where I felt like the pastor was truly a Godly man. So far some (not all by anymeans) I have questions about how they approach their sermons. But then again I'm not a pastor so probably don't know what I am talking about. Pray that I will seek God's will not my own.
Yours in Christ

Cool Jack. Been there, done that, that's how I knew. Here's one of my go-to sites. Just pick a topic and find a sermon on it or an answer in the "questions and answers" . I like Macarthur because he's not afraid to tackle the tough questions.

I though that starting at the word truth, and showing how truth is inseperable to His Word, and then backtracking to sin, and then working then towards repentance may be the way to go.

I found the passage that I was looking for at the end of my second post.

Remember when Jesus said that 'He would tell them the truth, but that they would not listen.' (Can't remember where the scripture is)

Starts here John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

John 8:43-46 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God."

Wew, Powerful.
