reba Rick W - I wasn't sure where to put this. If the moderators feel it should be somewhere else, feel free to move it.

I've noticed that people sometimes use different terms interchangeably or different people use different words to mean the same thing or the same word to mean different things. This can sometimes cause confusion (like in the previous sentence). I saw an example of this recently when I posted that the law was never meant to save us, and that salvation and eternal life aren't even mentioned in the law. Someone else replied by quoting some scripture and then suggesting that, in the Old Testament, righteousness came through the law. I didn't answer, because it wasn't in a debate forum but, to me at least, righteousness and salvation are two different things. Am I wrong? What do these words mean to you?

  • Righteousness
  • Sanctification
  • Holiness
  • Salvation
  • Justification
  • Redemption
  • Born again
Do any two or more of them mean the same thing? Does one depend on another? I'll let a few others post before I post my understanding. I want to see what others say without my definitions influencing their posts.

The TOG

Redemption, Salvation,
Justification, Righteousness
Sanctification, Holiness
Born again, made anew, born of the Spirit

It's fine here TOG as long as debates don't begin in which case it will have to be moved.

The TOG
  • Righteousness State of being right with God.
  • Sanctification Process of being made holy or perfect.
  • Holiness Perfection.
  • Salvation Being saved/rescued from the power of sin.
  • Justification Being made right God.
  • Redemption Restitution/atonement paid.
  • Born again Made anew.

I like your description of salvation, it definitely goes beyond the payment for sin, redemption.

Righteousness - right standing with Yahweh
Sanctification - being made clean for Yahweh
Holiness - being made perfect
Salvation - moved from death into eternal life
Justification - the reason I'm saved
Redemption - purchase
Born again - new life

I think righteousness, sanctification, and holiness are closely related because we're all of these things in Jesus and the first 6 are guaranteed to the person who is born again.

I don't think I could add anything more to what WIP already posted as the list is all that God requires in us through Christ Jesus being our Lord and Savior as none of this can be done of ourselves, but only by the blood of the Lamb.

  • Righteousness ....is only in Christ.
  • Sanctification... His Blood is my sanctification
  • Holiness... He is Holy
  • Salvation ... At the Cross
  • Justification... He looks at the heart
  • Redemption...i think of Abraham and how God redeemed Issac at the alter
  • Born again... by faith...
The context words are written in very much reflects the meanings... A lack of education shows up in my writing.. some of us can over simplify things/words
