Biblical numbers and names can tell a story in and of themselves. In trying to understand exactly what "the number of the beast" means, which is taken from.....

  • Revelation 13:15-17 And he (second beast) had power to give life unto the image of the (first) beast, that the image of the (first) beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the NUMBER OF HIS NAME.

13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

15:2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the NUMBER OF HIS NAME, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

Is the "number of the beast" the same as the "number of his name?" :chin I'm not sure.

The one that "had power to give life" to the first beast is the second beast...the one that rises "out of the earth." The first beast is a political system and the second beast is false religion! He/it rises out of the earth....out of humanity, for we are of the earth. The mark "in the forehead" and "in the hand" is simply to believe the deception the beasts provide...to be indoctrinated with false doctrine and to work to promote those systems.

But, this thread is about....the number of his name and what that might mean.

What does the "number of his name" mean. I saw the following yesterday and believe it tells us, or...gives us some clues. It is history and as such can be dry with endless numbers and names but....there is gold in them thar' hills, the hills being the book of Ezra. :lol Bear with me for it must be pointed out.

Long after the house of Judah was taken captive in Babylon, "in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia," God "charged" Cyrus to "build Him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah." [Ezra 1:1-2] In returning the men and "vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;" [1:7] (which I believe is symbolic of God's precious children) the vessels, the goods, the beasts, the precious things were...NUMBERED. [1:6] I will add, as I see the vessels and precious things being symbolic of God's children I see the beasts as Satan's children! We begin with.....

  • Ezra 1:9 And this is the number of them......

He numbers many of the Jewish children and with them we find numbered.....

  • 2:13 The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.

2:24 The children of Azmaveth, forty and two. ( * 42 - see below )

Those two numberings are important in this discussion but first, from 2:43-58 it is the Nethinim that are numbered...they are not of Judah!

  • 2:43 The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth, (58) All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

2:59 And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa, Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not shew their father's house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:

2:61-63 And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name: These sought their register among those that were reckoned by Genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood. And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim.

Not one true priest, of the priestly line as designated by the Lord, was in the congregation. But, the Nethinim (meaning...given, dedicated) were. They are those that were appointed to fulfill priestly duties...the duties the priest themselves didn't want to do. Before long they had taken over liturgical duties that God appointed the tribe of Levi to do. The results of the Levitical priests intermarrying while in captivity, as shown above, resulted in them "as polluted, put from the priesthood."

  • 2:64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore.

  • * Forty and two - Is a number connected with antichrist. (Numbers in Scripture)

[list:7umz6y65]Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

Three hundred and threescore = 360 = 3,3+3 - 360. The number three signifies Divine completeness, perfection. (Numbers in Scripture) Here is it shown as [3 and 60]...six being the number of man. Note that "threescore" was used in describing the "number of a man" in [Rev.13:18] with the number 666. [/list:u:7umz6y65]

So our Father is telling us...the whole congregation in the house of the Lord was/is mixed...not all were then or are now of God. Those not of God are....

  • John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty (but thou art rich), and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

How do I know Jesus' remark about those of the synagogue of Satan are the same that were numbered in Ezra? Let's go back to Ezra.....

  • Ezra 2:13 The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.

2:24 The children of Azmaveth, forty and two.

I know nothing about Azmaveth but as his children are numbered at forty and two....it speaks of who he is associated with. Adonikam is another story. That name is shown as Adonijah in other accounts....same man, different names with 666 children shown in his line! What are some of the historical details about his life?

  • 1 Kings 1:5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king:" and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

1:9-10 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants: But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

Adonijah/Adonikam is a type for Satan! He "slew sheep," symbolic of children of the Shepherd. The "stone" he slew them on, Zoheleth, is....THE SERPENT STONE. He called/calls all to him but not those named above or who they are types for today, among whom is the man child!

So, back to the original question...."what does the number of his name mean?"

We are told the "number of the beast, for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six," [Revelation 13:18] is the same number of men, 666 children of Adonikim/Adonijah, who is a type of Satan, the beast, in Ezra...where they were being numbered.

The number of the beast is the number of his children...those in the congregation of the Lord.

Dont you mean number of people in the congregation of satan?

No. That is what we must be aware of. They are numbered within the congregation of "the number of the men of the People of Israel...when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem." [Ezra 2:2,68]

Look at what John is saying. There's no angel here giving him an interpretation of what he saw, John is just telling his audience what he saw.

Rev 13:1 And he stood upon the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns, and seven heads, and on his horns ten diadems, and upon his heads names of blasphemy.
Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority.

Rev 13:11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like unto a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

And then he adds:

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six.

I think John knew who the beast was, but he put it in a riddle. Remember, no angel has told him who it is at this point, but John knew the man's "number." He doesn't tell us how he arrived at this number either. If it wasn't an angel, then, it was probably from his intellect that he derived it. Thus he most likely knew who it was. :twocents ;) :)

The man Adonikam/Adonijah was numbered and the number was....666, Adonijah being a type for Satan. They were numbered as those of God but they are those "which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."

I agree...John knew who the beast IS but it is God that Divinely inspired what John wrote. I don't believe the numbering of Adonikam's 666 in Ezra can be nothing more than a coincidence with John's numbering of the beast and his 666. To me it is a warning for us so we understand where and how the beast operates.

Or he was just being as "wise as a serpent." :lol ;) :D

I'll let you know if I find the beast somewhere! ;) :D

"For it is man's number." That could also mean one's social security number implanted in one's right hand so that one can buy and sell to prevent identity theft. :wink3 It's coming faster than we realize.

I just had someone "connect the dots" for me. :-) If anyone doesn't like seeing things with spiritual eyes then....this isn't the post for you. :D In another thread Nightmare said....

Revelation 13:18 "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

In the Greek that word "count" means to calculate by counting the stones that are worn smooth over a long period of time....

What are the "stones we are to count for a long, long time and where do we see it written?"

  • Mark 13:1- And as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples saith unto Him, "Master, see what manner of STONES and what buildings are here!" And Jesus answering said unto him, "Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down."

[list:6g6i88n0]Nahum 1:6 Who can stand before His indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him.
[/list:u:6g6i88n0]

The stones/rocks are people. Just as trees are symbolically used for people....so are stones (as well as many other things). That was shown to me several months ago yet I never connected it to the counting over a long period. For instance....

  • Luke 19:40 And He answered and said unto them, "I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out."

Well, stones don't "cry out" and trees don't "clap their hands" as written in a verse....these are people! Literally the stones of the temple still standing in the above verse are the wailing wall but spiritually they are people. What people, for they too are still standing? And, we are to know who they are.

As Nightmare has pointed out, we are to calculate, counting the stones, for the number of the beast. As the OP has shown....the children of the beast, the stones, were numbered long ago in Ezra. They are "worn smooth over a long period of time."

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six.

For it IS the number of A man. That "man"is the man that Daniel mention, who is the antichrist group "man". The Bible says there are only two men in the world. Christ and antichrist.Mat 24:40 Then shall two men be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: Mat 13:38 and the field is the world;

So that is the number of those who deny that Christ is coming in our flesh at this moment.2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, even they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. The rest all confess that Christ is indeed in them and is coming (going to manifest) the flesh of the Body of Christ.

  • Ezra 2:13 The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.

Adonikam, also known as Adonijah, who is a type of Satan and the 666 numbered with his name. Six, the number of man, however many the literal number is, I believe are those that do not confess "Jesus cometh in the flesh."

I just noticed...

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. this is a (the) deceiver and an (the) antichrist.

Bullinger writes that the text show....this is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Here is wisdom :twocents . She that hath understanding, let her look up 'gematria' and then throw the rest of this lusty fable of a study into the circular 'lake of fire' file. Adonikam and his six hundred threescore and seven children (Nehemiah 7:18) are not amused. :screwloose

I'm going to overlook your sarcasm because you might just be having a really bad day :bigcry and because you have brought up a really interesting point. Thank you Sinthesis :-)

Isn't it odd? 667 in Nehemiah and 666 in Ezra. Why? The total of the congregation given in both books was the same.

  • Nehemiah 7:66 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore.

Seeing 7:66 and 667 signals something. :chin There are no coincidences.

I hope you feel better soon..... :love2

Hi Whirlwind.
Hey, have you ever heard of a technique called first mention? I believe that John uses this technique often in his writing.
Take for example the metaphor for a nation, which according to Daniel is a beast.
In other words, where is the first place you hear the number 666? Right, it's in 1 kings in regard to the sins of Solomon... ;) Which may be one reason why the people called Jesus the Son of David.... Just what kind of Son of David would he be like?...

I believe that scripture is living and breathing... it's not data, it's a story. A story that repeats itself time and time again. :twocents

God bless.

Lol, yes, they used stones to count numbers in ancient times. They also used numbers to denote names.

In this verse we have the very name of the beast given under the symbol of the number 666. Before the invention of figures by the Arabs, in the tenth century, letters of the alphabet were used for numbers. The Greeks in the time of Homer, or soon after, are thought by some to have assigned to their letters a numerical value corresponding to their order in the alphabet: thus, α was 1, because the first letter; and É 24, being the last.

The method just described of representing numbers or letters of the alphabet, gave rise to a practice among the ancients of representing names also by numbers.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
Adam Clarke, LL.D., F.S.A., (1715-1832)

The normal method of calculation in ancient Rome, as in Greece, was by moving counters on a smooth table. Originally pebbles, calculi, were used.

Hi Jeff. :-) No, I have never heard of "first mention" but from your description agree completely with it. :yes

Yes, The Bible is a living, breathing...constantly repeating lesson for us that leads to the end of days. It is our guide through types.

  • Isaiah 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

I saw the following and want to add to the above....

  • Psalms 74:4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of Thy congregations; They set up their ensigns for signs. (7-8) They have cast fire into Thy sanctuary. They have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of Thy name to the ground. They said in their hearts, "Let us destroy them together:' They have burned up all the synagogues of GOD in the land.

His enemies, our enemies, roar from the congregations of the Lord! Who are they? The six hundred and sixty-six, those numbered of the beast.

Hello Whirlwind :wave

Very interesting topic. One which I'm enjoying :yes

Take a look, if you would at Deut 17:14-20 and then compare and contrast this with 1 Kings, chapter 9 thru 12.

Make note in 9:21 that Solomon used 'forced labor', that is, "slaves" to build the Temple.
In the splendour of Solomon's wisdom, he received 666 talents of Gold in one year... 10:14 to which he used to make tools of war (10-16-17). How do tools of war feed the hungry and care for the widow?

Now then, what did Deut 17: 14-20 say about aquiring horses and chariots from Egypt? Take a look at what Solomon did in 1 Kings 10:28. But it gets better, Solomon sells then to the Hittites and Syrians. That would make Solomon an Arms Dealer...

Solomon also sets up military bases around Israel and 'fortifies' them. (1 kings 9:15). Have you ever studied Megiddo?... it's very rich in historical content and symbolically is very useful later in the NT writings.

Lets stop and think about this for a moment. God has granted Solomon great wisdom as attested by the Queen of Sheba, but he uses that wisdom and wealth to build a military force. I don't think that was God's idea, at least according to the passages in Deut... but wait, it gets better in chapter 11 and 12.

In 1 Kings 11:1, Solomon marries many wives. Again, a no no according to Deut 17. and Solomon even sets up High Places for their gods in chapter 11. BTW, do you know what was offered as sacrifices to these gods?

Yes, Solomon was viewed as a great ruler of Israel by men, but then again, men always enjoy the security that wealth and arms have to offer.

When I look at "the number".... I believe it reflects the way of man, and not that of God. The number represents wealth and prosperity of an empire built on by the backs of slaves, oppression and military might. Think Egypt all over again, the only thing that changes is the name and location of the Empire. This also held true in the days before Jesus when Alexander the great was the ruler of the great empire, and then Rome a bit later in the time of Jesus. Like I said, the story keeps being retold and the question we must now ask is, "Who is the Empire today"...
