I define it as practical intelligence. Non academic. It can be a vague term though.
I have been known to make rash decisions. And foolish decisions too.
Like not shop around and buy the first product I see. Or say dumb things lacking in appropriateness and social intelligence.
I need some examples don't I. Let me think.....
anyway I lack it for sure.

One of my high school teachers often commented, "Common sense is not so common." In other words, common sense is something that comes from life experiences and what is common for one is not necessarily common for another. I think he was right.

I think that common sense is what they used to call, street smarts. Nowadays, eons later, I've come to understand that rather than common sense or street smarts, it is more aptly referred to as wisdom.

Intelligence, knowledge, reasoning and logic are all academic, of the mind and of the flesh. Carnal.

Wisdom and understanding are of the heart, not the mind. The heart has a much greater capacity for thought than our brain does. This is a medical fact now. We know this. But still, most people still tend to require themselves to reason and logic and continue to lean towards their own understanding to make decisions both small and great in life. So I guess there is truth to the saying of common sense is not common.

IMO common sense tells us what is right and what is wrong as within the decisions we make in life. It can be like a gut feeling that needs to thought out. Commonsense tells me not to do that which could harm me and also to weigh out the pros and cons in making important decisions as what is best for me to do.

Common sense is rational thinking.
