What is sin?

To go against something/someone. Also, to "miss the mark"; as in not acheiving a goal.

I used to believe it had to feel wrong and make you feel guilty for it to be "sin", but this is untrue. You can sin with the best of intentions. Like Paul, for example. He used to persecute the new covenant congregation. His offence was not necessarily the approval of their arrests and killings.

His offence/sin was thinking he was doing a favor for Yahweh when he actually was not. He missed the mark. The Jews also sinned by rejecting the Messiah. Not ultimately because they broke the law to the letter even, like we all do, but because they missed Romans 10:4. And no, not because they were particularly trying to be devilish, heathen, evil people. But because they "missed". These things are also sin, as well as Romans 14:23 and 1 John 3:4.

The greek "hamartia"= to miss the mark:

In essence, we fall below the nature of God. We do not measure up to His ways and His thoughts. We do not meet the standard of Spirit life.

Secondly, from the human standpoint, it is doing those things that are against God's will, or nature.

Alright both of you have indicated that it involves missing the mark.

How then is each of the following missing the mark?

Ephesians 4:31 NIV.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Colossians 3:8 NIV.
But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

In other words if we indulge in such things just what is it that we are missing out on?

Think. It's not difficult to know the love of God.

What is the opposite of all those negatives?

The sin is the opposite of what God's Good will is for us.
Sin is a transgression of all that is Holy.

Sin has it's opposite....

and that is....... all those items you mentioned are oppostie to what is not sin.

These are some forms of sin:

bitterness
rage
anger
brawling
slander,
every form of malice
filthy language from your lips

So tell, what is the opposite of these things?

Anyone can reach for the opposite "mark" of what our Heavenly Father will for us, but it will not serve them well in the long run of it all.

I ask this out of curiosity. What is the reason for creating a topic of this sort?

Relic ...Please tell me how your post attempts to answer the question posed in this thread?

All sin is sin....Add any forms you like for yourself, if it will help you in any way. But I fail to see how that will help me.

As for the reason for creating this topic: It is because I want to see how some of you put together some of the things you are posting. And you are one of those people.

Windozer,

Are you putting us to the test or something?

Why not you participate and show us your definition of sin? :)

That is very simple Relic.

I am attempting to understand you, as opposed to demanding that others understand me.

If you're bitter, you're failing to be forgiving. If you're angry, you're failing to be kind and gracious. If you're slandering, you're failing to tell the truth. If you're speaking with filthy language, you're failing to avoid the profane and obscene. God instructs us to be mindful of all these things, and to act as Jesus would. Jesus did not act with malice, or bitterness, or rage, or deceit.

In a nutshell, sin is acting contrary to the teachings of Jesus.

.

The difference between vain arrogance and Godly righteousness.

When we fail to see which one is sin and which one is not, is when we are faced with crossing over the threshold into sin, or not.

We have missed the mark in this case, if we fail to know the difference and act on that which is of the Godly principle.

Because the bahaviors that are contrary to God's way are not only displeasing to Him, but He knows the way of life that is good, that is beneficial, that grows, and does not destroy.
We are to become like Him.

Healthy life. Joy. Valuable friendships. Closeness to God. Ultimately, a better life and a better future.

And what about the Hebrew? It means the same thing...

Anyway I was going to say something about this favor of Greek over Hebrew but I don't want to get into that...

To answer your second question, Windozer, I don't think it's missing "out on" something technically. It's not about what you can get or how many blessings you attain. That's not the "miss" part. The "miss" part, since Yahweh is the one who creates a righteous standard of conduct, is basically not acheiving what he wants you to do, not necessarily what we can get from it.

Not saying that you said that, but I think Vic said something similar. No offense, Vic.

You can sin with the best of intentions.

(...)

And no, not because they were particularly trying to be devilish,
heathen, evil people.

Very true, most of us simply stumble into that and and hardly notice it,
and when confronted with it try to dismiss it with a "universal law of love"
that we attribute to God.

While all the way the first thing sin does is separate us from God.
Because he is always holy he can have no part in our sin, it's us that
activley practise separation. If we don't see that we basically harden our heart
and justify it with a doctrine of love, not aware we just trangressed and
are "preaching in the flesh". It's a proud thing to do when humbleness
would lead the way to realize it and turn around. The hand of grace
and love is always there, we just have to yield to it and accept it
(again) with thanks and joy.

2 Chronicles 7-14, If My people, which are called by Name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways,
then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Sin is separation from God. Christ is the mediator, and our willing blood payment to be freed from sin, and restored to God. Those who do not receive the blood payment, (the doorway of their heart is not painted with the blood of the Lamb) will be separated, due to their sin, forever. Sin consists of a lot of deeds, and attitudes, but ultimately it is a separation from God.

Certainly there are natural consequences to our sin, and also our obedience, built into life, but when boiled down whats left is eternity spent with God, or without. The Lord bless you.

Wavy your response (as well as Relic's) response comes from head knowledge. Students of the book !!!

You also said:

Vic's response comes from a heart knowledge. I agree with Vic, because of personal experience. I have and am presently enjoying some of that protection, which translates into (for me) a huge blessing. And there is nothing any of you can say that can take that away from me.

It is about 18 inches from the head to the heart, and for some it is one of the longest journeys.

Third question....Is all sin sin to every one? In other words is what is sin for you also sin for others?
