What is spirit?

I have a spirit, God has A Spirit.

But.... what is Spirit. What does it mean to be filled with Holy Spirit?

Right now I am having conflicting thoughts on whether The Holy Spirit is God, or if it is separate but equal part of God ( as in The Trinity)

I know what my mind does. I know what my body does. But I am wondering what my spirit is. I am not losing my faith at all. It is as strong as ever.

I was thinking this morning about people in comas. A machine will keep her heart beating, her lungs breathing, but she has no brain waves. I was thinking that maybe it is our spirits that make us alive, to think, to be. Our brains can work without our spirit make our heart pump, to make our body move, etc, but that person is not alive, is "brain dead". I was thinking it is our spirits that makes us alive.
People can build robots who can think (process information), who can do tasks, but they are not alive. They can't be. They have no emotions, can't learn new things without someone programming it into them. They have no spirit.
What are your thoughts on this? I obviously don't know everything, so I learn from others. I would like to know what others believe spirit is.

Here is the Catholic Encyclopedia answer to the question.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14220b.htm

Spirit is not neccessarily God, though God is spirit. Angels are spirtual beings and so spirit does not have to be God. I think it right to say that man's spirit is what gives life. God made man's body and then he breathed on him in Genesis. He breathed spirit in to the lifeless physical body and it came alive. When we die our spirit separates from our body and it is no longer alive.

I don't really know if people who don't have brain waves still have the spirit within the flesh but I think probably you are right and they do not.

Hi. To be filled with the Holy Spirit means when you become saved[a new creature in Christ], then you are filled with the Holy Spirit [God dwells inside you].

I have what is probably a somewhat unconventional take on this issue. For a number of reasons, I find the notion of the existence of an "immaterial" spirit hard to understand and make sense of. In a sense, I have very strong materialist inclinations (in the philosophical sense, not in the "wealth" sense) for a Christian.

I am still trying to construct a view about "spirit" that is true to my reading of the Scriptures, my experiences as a Christian, and my "philosophical" inclination to believe that there does not really exist a distinction between the "physical" and the "spiritual". While this distinction is indeed expressed in some places in the Scripture, I think that the distinction is not intended to assert a fundamental dualism in "the world", but is rather a useful metaphor, such as the metaphorical distinction we often draw between "heart" and "head".

To say at least something, I will propose that a human "spirit" is not an entity that can be said to exist independent of the body.

Life, love and wisdom - the nature of God.

This is not a statement to support any form of religious understanding; it's just what I believe.

I accept it for what it is and try not to make it any more or any less than a means to life, love and wisdom - ultimately God.

This is the only way I know how to share my understanding. God bless. :D

Drew - what do you think it means to be born again (born of the Spirit) if you don't see any distinction between the physical and spiritual. Or do I have a wrong take on what you are saying?

If you don't see anything when the brain is dead then that should answer your question. When people come out of a coma brain waves return and there is activity. Do you see the correlation?

Science is in fact very close to making a robot that does feel pain. Perhaps not the pain we feel but pain no less. What is pain in the first place? It is a warning to the body or in the robots case a warning to the machine. I don't see much of a difference of how the pain or warning is conveyed it accomplishes the same result.

I don't think spirits exist in any form. I was once intrigued by the idea of ghosts etc until it was pointed out that ghosts, spirits and angels are always clothed. Where do they buy the wardrobe?

I just have time to post a site I had recommended as soundly Biblical:-

http://www.christian-faith.com/bible-st ... ching.html

Malfunction blocked me from index: hope you can reach it OK

I'll just quickly recommend John 1, Colossians 1, Hebrews 1 & 1 Corinthians 1

The nature of God often comes up first

See Proverbs 1 too

Must go

Romans 8:10
But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

James 2:26
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Scripture tells us that if we don't have a spirit we are dead. So we conclude that the spirit is that part of man which is life. And how are we given life? By the Spirit of God. As the scripture says, that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

I'm shocked that in the week that I had been AWOL, no one had included....

The 7 faceted, or complete Spirit of God as being....

Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

These attributes may be given one at a time, or in part to any individual....

For example: When the Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson he was endowed with Super Human Strength...Solomon, the Spirit of Wisdom.

The Spirit comes and goes on a person...again, Samson was normal until the Spirit of God "rested on him".

Jesus, was an ordinary man until his baptism...then what happened? The complete Spirit of God came and rested on him...making him a super man.
