What @ NFL church superbowl crackdown?

1. NFL lawyers searching church web sites for copyright infringements

Like many churches, Fall Creek Baptist Church in Indianapolis was planning a group viewing of the Super Bowl. Its "Super Bowl Bash" was to include an evangelistic element: a video of Colts coach Tony Dungy and several of his players talking about Jesus.

NFL lawyers found the announcement on the church's website and FedEx'ed a cease-and-desist order. The church's large screen (only screens 55 inches and smaller are allowed), use of the words "Super Bowl," and other plans violated copyright laws, the lawyers said. So does the evangelistic video.

NFL assistant counsel Rachel L. Margolies wrote to the congregation, according to The Indianapolis Star: "While this may be a noble message, we are consistent in refusing the use of our game broadcasts in connection with events that promote a message, no matter the content."

There's no word on how many other churches have been contacted by the NFL, or whether Lovie Smith's own church, which was planning to show the game on a projection screen to up to 1,000 people, has special dispensation.

But given the quotes from multiple NFL representatives in the Star article, this isn't just the case of one overzealous attorney. This may be the end of a very common annual church practice across the country. Already, some churches are scrambling to cancel or change Sunday's events. Others say they'll keep holding events until they get their own letter from NFL attorneys.

My salesman's instinct says, "Don't panic: get together & negotiate"

& in God's perfect timing, in prayer last night, He told me to write into my diary the URL's for the 'Top 15' US megachurches - they all have over 15,000 members

I'm sure you'll get the Top 100 by archive search @ http://www.outreachmagazine.com

Btw, I owe the mag an apology for a misunderstanding: I thought they'd simply offered a free sample copy & was amazed when copies came, month by month

Followed by an ainvoice I simply coudn't & can't pay - but I'm looking for work with http://www.tfh.org & will recommend them to recommend it to all member churches - (& pay you as soon as I can!)

I'll type the 15 next...

Personally, I am SO sick of the worship of sports and sports figures in this country, and seeing stadiums referred to as 'cathedrals', that I could puke. And I mean that. :o

Hear Hear!!

It is a sad state for the church, if the only way we have to get them into the doors is by using sporting events which glamourize violence, greed, and eye-candy.

I forget who said it first, but the church needs to get out of the stained glass windows and begin touching stained lives.

I'm not too much into football myself, but I am a big Tony Dungy fan. I have prayed for him from the first time I heard him say that he was a Christian. God has given me a burden to pray for celebrities. When a celebrity makes his faith known, they need a special anointing to deal with it. God has used Tony in a powerful way, and I believe that Tony has been rewarded for his faithfulness to the Lord. May God continue to protect, bless, and use Tony for His glory!

Can you help me understand when you say that "Tony has been rewarded for his faithfulness to the Lord"?

Is that because Tony Dungy and the Colts were able to make it to the Super Bowl, or because they won the Super Bowl?

And if it is because they won, that what does that say of Lovey? Did he not win because he is not faithfull enough? Is Lovey not outspoken enough? Does he not warrant a 'special annointing'? Did he not 'pray enough' before or during the game?

JR - noone is trying to take God's glory away.

Did I miss something here? :-?

I do hope you all realize that Tony D is not the only coach and the Colts are not the only team that pray together.

And while I appreciate athletes that are Christian, do Chrisitans spend to much time and money 'worshipping' sports? Are they really worth the high-price contract?

Reminds me of a guy whose life was baseball. All baseball. Baseball this and baseball that. It had detrimental effects on the family. So he prayed and prayed and found the strength he needed through Christ. All went well. He returned to church with a desire for Christ and worshipped his God with his family.
Then the church decided to sponsor a family outing for the congregation ... offering discounted tickets to a home baseball game.
:D

aLoneVoice,
1.) Tony is a home boy. The west coast of Florida is his stomping ground. For a very long time this area had Tony on the TV screen with their evening meal. The Bay area supported him when he coached the Bucs, They were sad when he left. They grieved with him at the death of his son. As far as communities go, Tony is family.

2.) He won the Superbowl. That put him in a white-hot spotlight,

3.) When he got in that spotlight, He gave glory to God.

None of those things are bad. In fact, I believe that he has blazed a trail for some of the other coaches and teams that you are concerned about. Because he gives glory to God ~ publicly~ his faith is often spoken of during the evening sports cast. Even to the point that one broadcaster recently said that he once heard that Tony said a swear word, then apologized for it.

For many years, when a celebrity mentioned Christ, it would be edited out of the broadcast. It is still rare for secular media to mention Jesus Christ unless they are ridiculing the Christian. Tony has won the respect of the sports world, and now has a platform where he can touch the world for Jesus. I praise God for Tony and his testimony.

I do encourage you to pray for the other Christian coaches and teams that they are able to glorify God in their lives as well.

Ooh, ooh... Joe Gibbs and Bobby Bowden.

Joe wrote the 'forward' for the book, "Becoming One: Moving Your Marriage From Performance to Faith"

A little about Bobby;

In 2004, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented the first of what is now a yearly award in Bowden's name, The National Bobby Bowden Award, honoring one college football player for his achievements on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The award is presented each year prior to the Bowl Championship Series' national title game.

A quote from him for those who feel things are getting 'better' in the world;

Is America a better place now than fifty years ago? Degree by degree by degree, I feel we have lost our morality
