What Really Happened at Fatima?

I believe these people really experienced something at Fatima in 1917, but what was it? And was it from God, or that other guy?

The other guy, in my opinion. This was the prophecy:
"When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father," said the message. There was special mention of Russia, which was about to turn atheistic. The Virgin asked that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart to prevent a dangerous future. "If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace," the Blessed Mother prophesied. "If not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated."
Lucia, the oldest of the three children, was convinced that she saw the "prophecy" come true in the highly unusual display of the aurora borealis on January 13, 1938, a display that was witnessed as far south as northern Africa. Judgment has not yet come, however. Certainly the negative aspects of the vision have come true, but Russia has since been "converted" though it could be argued it is falling back into its communist ways, politically if not economically.

I believe the Bible provides the best and only prophecy of the end times, and we will know it when we see it, but we won't know it is coming until it is here.

I read about this years ago. Pretty freaky but there are numerous explanations for it that are pretty mundane.

I think what really makes this different is that it happened in "our time". Most of us were alive while first hand accounts were still available. Sister Lúcia of Fátima only died recently at 97 years old. (28 March 1907 – 13 February 2005)

True. I'd like to be open-minded about it but i'm a little skeptical that it was a supernatural event. I think the problem with the accounts is that many of them vary. Some claim to have seen the sun dance, some that the colour changed, some claim that they saw nothing at all despite being believers.

It certainly was not a real, astrological phenomenon because there are no records of any observatories witnessing this event. It was localized, to about 16km I think and there was a lot of expectation surrounding this event as there had been rumors of similar events occuring around that area, around the same time. So there was definitely a highly suggestive atmosphere.

And staring at the sun for ten minutes is bound to mess with a person's perception.
