Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and even though it’s been decades since his work, racism, discrimination, and prejudice are alive in the U.S. Why?

In my opinion most of the anti-racial movements, laws, etc. actually do more to feed the racism fire than to improve things. This happens because race is used too often as an escape goat when things don't go well. I also believe there is a misguided understanding in this country that white people are not subject to racism and this too is a false assumption.

amen

plus we all come from adam and eve and noah - so all races are coded in our dna anyway - it's just a matter of what characteristics come to dominance

Racism can still be profitable to some. So long as there's a pay-off for racism, it's going to continue. You can complain about "cancel culture", but when individuals and businesses say that they aren't going to tolerate it any more, and put their spending where their mouths are, that hits racists where they hurt the most. And it's happening.

Government has done a great deal to end racism but government will always have a negative role, that of stopping de jure racism and punishing violations of civil rights. The private sector can do both positive and negative actions to combat racism. And that's where progress is being made today. The Southern Baptist Convention originated when Baptists in the South separated from other Baptists in an effort to save slavery. Yet today, the SBC has apologized for past racism and has sought to eliminate it in the denomination. That took a great deal of courage and humility, and we should recognize that and encourage other private organizations to do likewise.

There's still de jure racism, such as race-based voter suppression, Gerrymandering, and profiling by police and other government agencies. But it's dying; we just need to be vigilant and to go after it wherever it appears.
