Growth What The Storms Of Life Are About

Tuesday morning. July 14, 0200 hours. I was roused from sleep by the rushing winds of an impending thunderstorm—a nice reprieve from the relentless tropical heat. After helping our maid shut all the windows (it’s a good thing she’s not a heavy sleeper), the rain came fast and furious.

As I lay in bed, I decided to pray in tongues and make some scriptural confessions. I was having a health issue and decided to speak up instead of suffer in silence. Not too many syllables were uttered when there was a particularly loud blast of thunder.

Heaven’s answer?

More like an agreement. That thunder jolted my memory. It (and the others that soon followed) reminded me of what God had shown me about lightning and thunder—on another thundery Tuesday morning, nine years ago.

I managed to locate what I had written almost a decade ago, and I’m reproducing it here with minor edits:

A loud blast of thunder woke me up on the morning of Tuesday, September 5, 2006. It happened just before 6am. It was still dark outside and it was raining lightly.

There were five to six more loud bangs. I could see the bright flashes through my window. And with each lightning flash came the accompanying thunder blast within a second or two.

I love the sound of thunder. Whenever I hear thunder, I am reminded of the timeless hymn, How Great Thou Art:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed…

To me, thunder is God’s power displayed throughout the universe. The splendor and power of the lightning bolt, and the majestic sound of the thunder reverberating through the skies (and the walls of my room), remind me of how awesome a God I serve.

As I lay on my bed, I wondered why the thunder came after the lightning. I know that light travels faster than sound, but why did God design in that way? As I thought about it, I received this revelation in my spirit:

THE LIGHT OF GOD’S WORD IS FOLLOWED BY SOUND.

My friend, when you receive light from God’s Word for a dark situation in your life, you ought to give voice to the word received. You ought to speak it or confess it.

These scriptures were then brought to my mind:

Romans 10:10
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth CONFESSION is made unto salvation.

2 Corinthians 4:13
And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore SPEAK,

Revelation 12:11
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the WORD OF THEIR TESTIMONY…

If you really believe the word you have received, it is only natural you speak it forth. It is as natural as thunder coming after lightning. It is as natural as a fishing enthusiast telling his friends about the joys of fishing as they chat in a coffee shop.

I wondered about the rain too. In the Bible, God’s Word is likened to falling raindrops. It comes down from heaven and ministers truth and life to us:

Deuteronomy 32:1–2
“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass.

Isaiah 55:10–11
“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Just as rain falls to the earth, lightning falls to the earth. God’s Word comes down to us from heaven like rain and lightning. The wetness of His Word washes, refreshes and nourishes us (Ephesians 5:26). The light of His Word drives away darkness and shows us the way (Psalm 119:105). And the thundery sound of His Word sends the enemy fleeing in seven directions (Deuteronomy 28:7).

Isn’t it wonderful that God can speak to us about His ways through nature? Indeed, the apostle Paul said, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…” (Romans 1:20).

Beloved of the Lord, learn give voice to the light of His Word. Isn’t that what the storms of life are about?

Beloved of the Lord, learn give voice to the light of His Word. Isn’t that what the storms of life are about?

Isaiah 6:4
And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Isaiah 6:6
Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

The word is hidden in our hearts (where we may meditate on it). To move the word from our heart (where the crucified Christ is), it takes supernatural means to get it to the speech center of our brain. The parasympathetic nerves are an angelic pathway ( message road / way). The spirit has to be invited in.

I totally agree in speaking the revelation we receive. I also understand the storm that surrounds delivering the message, but we must rest in the middle of the stormy crossing.
