"And six years thou shalt sow thy land... But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy olive yard." — Exodus 23:10-11
This scripture considers the poor of thy people, but more interestingly, the beasts of the field. It takes an enlightened spirit to have this type of compassion not just to the poor but to the wild animals.
"And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger." — Leviticus 19:10
Here we also have a regard for the "stranger", the foreigner, the immigrant - the person whom many modern Republicans want to exclude from America.
