H0457 idols 'eliyl (el-eel')
TWOT - 99a apparently from 0408
Part of Speech

1) of nought, good for nothing, worthless

a) of physicians, a shepherd, a divination

b) of false gods

Lev 26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.

"Idols" as used here are "non-entities; "elilim" in the Hebrew text, those things made from clay or earthen forms to be worshipped. "Graven images" [Hebrew = "pesel"] on the other hand are images formed of wood or stone to be bowed down to. A "standing image" is a "Mazzebah" a standing pillar, whether in relation to worship of the zodiac, sun worship or any other standing image. The "images of stone" or "Maskith" in the Hebrew were images that were sculptured or painted on stone surfaces. The only reason that a person would bow down to one of these images would be to worship. We are not to worship any creation made at the hands of any man, or natural shaped image. Our Heavenly Father is the creator of all things, and only He is to receive honor, praise, and worship.

Exd 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Exd 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

An image, something worshiped, like to make a image, then bow down and worship it. Don't worship Angels or sticks, or the image of the beast in Rev 13:15, Rev 19:20. If you worship Satan as Jesus/God then you break the first comandment.

Exd 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
God is number one! So anything that comes between you and God can be a idol. Like if you don't take the time to study God's word a little before you go fishing. Your boat can then be an idol. We always have to take some time to study and worship God first.

"visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"
If you hate God, then it could be a 100 generations.

Anything or anyone that you place above God is an idol.

True to the latter part. I'm not so sure that God is going to get mad if someone decides to read their Bible after they've come back from fishing though.

However, it's not true that subsequent generations of people will suffer for the sins of the previous generations. God did away with that in Ezekiel:

Eze 18:1 The LORD spoke to me
Eze 18:2 and said, "What is this proverb people keep repeating in the land of Israel? 'The parents ate the sour grapes, But the children got the sour taste.'
Eze 18:3 "As surely as I am the living God," says the Sovereign LORD, "you will not repeat this proverb in Israel any more.
Eze 18:4 The life of every person belongs to me, the life of the parent as well as that of the child. The person who sins is the one who will die.
Eze 18:5 "Suppose there is a truly good man, righteous and honest.
Eze 18:6 He doesn't worship the idols of the Israelites or eat the sacrifices offered at forbidden shrines. He doesn't seduce another man's wife or have intercourse with a woman during her period.
Eze 18:7 He doesn't cheat or rob anyone. He returns what a borrower gives him as security; he feeds the hungry and gives clothing to the naked.
Eze 18:8 He doesn't lend money for profit. He refuses to do evil and gives an honest decision in any dispute.
Eze 18:9 Such a man obeys my commands and carefully keeps my laws. He is righteous, and he will live," says the Sovereign LORD.
Eze 18:10 "Then suppose this man has a son who robs and kills, who does any of these things
Eze 18:11 that the father never did. He eats sacrifices offered at forbidden shrines and seduces other men's wives.
Eze 18:12 He cheats the poor, he robs, he keeps what a borrower gives him as security. He goes to pagan shrines, worships disgusting idols,
Eze 18:13 and lends money for profit. Will he live? No, he will not. He has done all these disgusting things, and so he will die. He will be to blame for his own death.
Eze 18:14 "Now suppose this second man has a son. He sees all the sins his father practiced, but does not follow his example.
Eze 18:15 He doesn't worship the idols of the Israelites or eat the sacrifices offered at forbidden shrines. He doesn't seduce another man's wife
Eze 18:16 or oppress anyone or rob anyone. He returns what a borrower gives him as security. He feeds the hungry and gives clothing to the naked.
Eze 18:17 He refuses to do evil and doesn't lend money for profit. He keeps my laws and obeys my commands. He will not die because of his father's sins, but he will certainly live.
Eze 18:18 His father, on the other hand, cheated and robbed and always did evil to everyone. And so he died because of the sins he himself had committed.
Eze 18:19 "But you ask, 'Why shouldn't the son suffer because of his father's sins?' The answer is that the son did what was right and good. He kept my laws and followed them carefully, and so he will certainly live.
Eze 18:20 It is the one who sins who will die. A son is not to suffer because of his father's sins, nor a father because of the sins of his son. Good people will be rewarded for doing good, and evil people will suffer for the evil they do.
Eze 18:21 "If someone evil stops sinning and keeps my laws, if he does what is right and good, he will not die; he will certainly live.
Eze 18:22 All his sins will be forgiven, and he will live, because he did what is right.
Eze 18:23 Do you think I enjoy seeing evil people die?" asks the Sovereign LORD. "No, I would rather see them repent and live.
Eze 18:24 "But if a righteous person stops doing good and starts doing all the evil, disgusting things that evil people do, will he go on living? No! None of the good he did will be remembered. He will die because of his unfaithfulness and his sins. (GNB)

The reason this was done is that people were using God's prior Word on the matter to continue sinning. IOW, if one's parent sinned, and the person was going to pay the penalty for that, then why bother to be good? Might as well keep sinning!

Worship God. Revelation 22:9b.

Hi Imagican:

This answer can be made using very few words. An idol is anything or anyone you place into the position of “His God and Father†(Revelation 1:6) of our Lord Jesus Christ to worship as “Deity.†“His God and Father†= “one God†and Christ Jesus = “one Mediator†(1 Timothy 2:5) through whom you have access to Him. That idol can be a figure of an animal or the image of a man or even the Son of God Himself. Satan does not care who replaces our “one God,†so long as you do that with somebody else . . .

No, he did not "do away" with anything. The torah is not talking about punishing children because of what their fathers did because Yahweh is angry.

It says the 3rd/4th generations of them that "hate" him. And if you hate him, you are obviously not walking in his torah, thus you are sinning.

So the sins that you commit are going to be repayed double and even more if you have not learned the lesson from your rebellious ancestors. That is what he meant.

Well, I might not have been clear, so I'll just let the verses I quoted stand for themselves.

A.W. Tozer talks about that what you believe God to be, can easily become an idol.

Like, if you go to church, expecting God to move in a way you're used to, your image of God becaomse an idol, not of the hand, but of the mind.

(Taken from "Knowledge of the Holy" by AW Tozer.

Yes I agree , that's one of the trickiest idols that makes you
pray to the "god in your room" instead of God in heaven.
What do we expect the result of a false communication to be?

Appart from that what's the greatest idol -- SELF.
We love to get worshiped. Even more so in the natural state,
as demonstrated on the TV show "American Idol".
Not only that everyone wants to be a star, also most are in total
self-denial regarding their ability to sing. If that's any indication
about the 'state of the nation' I'd say " we're full of ourselves" but keep
insisting that the judges are wrong, and we can sing, indeed.
It's part of the dream world called -- SELF.

Amen, Geo.

God deserves so much more then what we can possible offer.

A good read on this is Humility by Andrew Murray, one of the best books I have ever read. It talks about keeping ourselves nothing, so God can be glorified. (See quote in my sig.)
