hello Edward, dirtfarmer here
In John 5:24 Jesus said, " He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation;" Notice, "hath everlasting life" past tense: "shall not come into condemnation" future tense. Everlasting life has no condemnation because of being born from above and being sealed with the Spirit of promise.
John 5:39 " Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life". Where did those that Jesus was speaking to believe that their eternal life resided? Was it not scriptures, but where did Jesus say the scriptures said that eternal life resided? Was it not in him? "And(but) they (scriptures) are they(the testimony) which testify of me." Jesus is saying that our eternal life is not in scriptures but in himself, which the scriptures testify to.
You're right. But if we take a closer look at the wording of this passage, we see that he that heareth His word and believeth on Him that sent me...hath everlasting life, and wont come into condemnation...
Everlasting life...for those who heareth and believe...a few verses down from there, says, search the scriptures for in them ye think that yuou have eternal life...Huh?
Eternal life...everlasting life...are we talking about two different things here?!
I can see us getting saved and receiving everlasting life, but do we then also receive eternal life? Do we become eternal beings like the Lord is?
Therein lies the rub...
So say a man received Jesus, received everlasting life. Where does one go from there?
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:.../
Now the man has everlasting life, AND...the power to become the sons of God...(something more than everlasting life), so how does one do that? move forward...By pressing forward with effort, by the renewing of our mind (we renew our mind through His Word) which will lead us into relationship with Him.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.../
