Some people say, on the one hand, that we are to have faith in the Lord. On the other hand, they say the Lord will send most people to be tortured forever. It doesn’t seem to me both statements can be correct.

If you want my opinion, I think the correct statement is that we are to have faith in the Lord.

That doesn’t mean the Lord doesn’t discipline us, but I think the purpose of the discipline is to influence us to repent of our sin.

Both statements are very correct that if you have faith in Christ your reward will be that of the promise which is the inheritance of the New Earth to reign with Christ forever, but to those who reject Christ will have their place in the lake of fire and be no more.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Heb 11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

If we have the faith of Christ in us then we will obtain a good report as being a faithful servant of Christ.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Hosea 4:7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
Hosea 4:8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
Hosea 4:9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

If we have no faith in Christ then we have no obedience to his word and fall short of his glory and we know the wages of sin is death.

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

God doesn't want any to perish, but knows not everyone will accept his grace and mercy and to their end will be the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 but the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

For his glory

I agree with what you said. I would only add that to have the faith of Christ we must walk by the Spirit. That may seem picayune, but you would be surprised at how many Christians wouldn’t make the connection.

Most definitely we have to walk by His Spirit otherwise we would be walking by a carnal perspective of the word of God that quenches the Holy Spirit in us and causes us to step out of Gods will to walk in our own fleshly will.
