The final film from the celebrated production team of the late Ismail
Merchant and director James Ivory (ROOM WITH A VIEW, THE REMAINS OF
THE DAY) is a poignant historical drama set in 1930s' China. Ralph
Fiennes (THE CONSTANT GARDENER) plays a blind American ex-diplomat who
becomes enchanted by Sofia (Richardson, ASYLUM), a former Russian
countess working as a dancer in Shanghai. When a wager on a horserace
nets Jackson a small fortune, he opens 'The White Countess' bar,
invites Sofia to work as a hostess, and a reluctant courtship begins.
