Why so little?

Why so little text on John the Baptist?

Jesus' own words claim this man to be the greatest ever born among men (other than Christ of course :)) so why so little about him?

Same with Melchizedek (sp), Abraham paid homage to him, yet nothing much about him.

Of course, the Bible is ultimately about Christ, but strange there is so little about such important people.

I dont know LLoyd but if the purpose was to see that John would be revered in Chrisitian history it certainly worked.

If you study harder you will find all the scriptures for John the Baptist and Melchizedek. I'll help you out, but it's up to you to read them all.

Scripture for John the baptist life and description: Isaiah 40:3-5; Matthew 3:3; Luke 1:11-20, 63, 80; 3:1-3, 15; John 1:29-36; 5:33; 3:25-36, Matthew 3:13-16; 11:2-18; Mark 6:17, 18; Matthew 4:12; 14:3-12; John 3:25-31; Acts 13:24, 25; 18:24-26; 19:1-5; Luke3:2-18

Melchizedek was a King of righteousness as being the King of Salem being a Priest of God who received a tenth of Abraham's goods. He is described as having no parents and considered a great man of God. He was typical of Christ's eternity, Priesthood and Kingship.
Ref: Gen 14:18-20; Hebrews 7:2-4; Psalms 110:4; Hebrews 8:1

Part of the answer would be, I think, that John the Baptist Himself said: 'He must increase, but I must decrease'.

Well, let me comment on John.... John was Jesus' cousin and 6 months older than he. How much do we know about Jesus' life? little about the first 12 years, nothing about the next 18-20 and quite a bit about the next 3-4 years. Same with John, only even less.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John may not have ever met or heard of John (although I doubt they never heard of him) until they met Jesus and learned about him. Peter and Andrew were his disciples before meeting Jesus, so they could've gave some insight, but other than that, what would the gospel writers have known other than what Jesus, Peter and Andrew told them?

I don't know if that's the right answer or a reasonable answer, but there it is...

good reply:thumbsup

just my theory, I think Jesus was where we needed our lessons. I think John did a good job but I think he did it in a way that we will not, so it is harder for us to get our head around.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I am a big fan of John the Baptist.

Great answer, and interesting comparison between John the Baptist and Melchizedek as well.

Those who pointed forward to Christ make for great studies.
