Why were they so hostile

towards the true Messiah.

Matthew 26: 3 Then asembled together the chief priests, and the scribes and the elders of the people unto the palace of the high priest Caiaphas.

And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtility and kill him.

The Sadducees arrested the apostles and threw them into jail where they were severely beaten and told never to preach in the name of Jesus again

The Jewish leaders knew from the prophecies of the bible that Jesus was the Messiah but why was this hatred of Jesus so intense. Is there a difference in the attitude of the Jewish people today... not quite sure.:sad

Today many Christian pastors talk about the Israel, they are God's people etc, but the fact is that even though they maybe the children of Abraham, that does not mean that they are exempt from accepting Jesus. Would not the same thing apply to the Muslims. The bible states that there is no other name under heaven where men may be save. The Jews have to accept him along with all the other religions that have denied Jesus.

THIS IS NOT AN ANTI-JEWISH POST

Did they know? I'm thinking if they knew he was the Messiah, they would have acted differently. I don't think they knew. I think they were blinded by their own ambitions.

Jesus told them that he would rise the third day. They told the soldiers to say that his disciples came and stole his body. They gave the soldiers money.

I believe theirs was A DELIBERATE PLOT. They knew the scriptures but were envious. The word envy is used many times in the gospels.

Perhaps they knew it in their heart, but let their doubt cloud their mind. The devil is good at encouraging doubt.

Plus, the presence of God can actually be unpleasant when you're being convicted of sin. The "don't remind me and just leave me be because I don't want to change" kind of unpleasant. I think this likely had something to do with the Pharisee's treatment of Jesus.

Just my thoughts.:thumbsup

I don't think they knew Jesus was the Messiah. I'm convinced they believed he was NOT the Messiah, and COULD NOT be the Jewish Messiah. Jesus did not behave in the way Jews expected a Messiah to act. http://www.nvcc.edu/home/lshulman/rel232/resource/Jews&Jesus.htm

As Christians we understand Jesus to be the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy of a suffering servant, but that was most certainly not what Jewish leaders were thinking of in a Messiah.

Not even Jesus' disciples understood Him to be the Messiah, until after His resurrection.

The Pharisee were very 'religious' but did not really know God nor His ways. They were more concerned with their traditions and man made doctrines. Jesus did not always go by their traditions and that upset them. He even corrected and rebuked them at times.

Mark 7:13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

Another reasons they were so hostile toward Him was when He read where the prophet Isaiah was prophesying about the Messiah.

Luke 4:17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you've heard it read aloud." 22All the people spoke well of him. They were amazed to hear the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

And then he didn't finish the verses but sit down and inferred the Messiah was there right now and it was about Him. ( which of course we know it was) . They could not fathom the Messiah not following their 'laws', for example, healing on the Sabbath day. To them he was just a Rabbi, who was the son of the carpenter Joseph.

Also they were jealous because the people loved Him and followed Him more than they did the Pharisees.

Indeed, there is no other path to Heaven but through Jesus.

Being the children of Abraham is not enough to be God's people. E.g. Hosea 1:9, John 8:44. Speaking of definitions, modern Jews define a Jew as someone born to a Jew or someone who converts to their religion. Being a child of Abraham is not part of their definition, nor is it implied.

I don't think the hostility of modern Jews to Christianity tells us much about the hostility of first century Jews to Christianity. If Jesus wasn't the Christ, the jewish leaders in Jesus' day would have been in the right (without regard to their hypocrisy and cowardly approach). Some of them could have been simply wicked. Others, like Saul, simply in error.

Modern Christian have been conditioned to think of religion as a superficial lifestyle choice. But, biblically, nothing is more important. What would you do if you heard someone plotting cold-blooded murder? Call the police and with proof that person would be thrown in prison. What's worse? Killing a body or killing a soul, an abbreviated life vs. an abbreviated eternity. When someone plots blaspheme, that's plotting murder of the soul. That's what the Pharisees thought Jesus was doing - and it brings, under mosaic law, the death penalty.

Here here! I agree. What would you do if someone made you look stupid in front of all the people you had kissing your butt? They saw Jesus as some kind of mocker, but an affective one. His reputation was huge and growing and they did'nt like that. Its like Jesus was taking money from them and giving it back to the people they had fooled. They like steak-n-shrimp and Jesus would've had them eat potatoe chips, feel me? :lol They were spoiled. We have many like that today. I bet if you told a rich fake pastor to give the money back he would forget his faith and try to kick your butt. :yes May god be with you always.
