This present earth is reserved for fire.

This has to do with water. On the second day God created a "dome" that holds the atmosphere in. We start off with water, H2O then that is split into oxygen and Hydrogen. Oxygen is heavy and the gravity pushes it in. Athough Newton saw gravity as a pull, Einstein as a push. Hydrogen is light and it just goes out into space. So whatever gas they produce is heavy enough that it becomes a part of our atmosphere.
