Windows 10 is a free upgrade

Unless I see a pretty significant reason I should upgrade I will probably avoid this. In fact I have been considering downgrading my laptop to 7 ever since it automatically upgraded to 8.1. Never sat well with me.

Can you keep 7, and switch back easily when 10 proves to be just as much of a mistake as most Microsoft OS upgrades?

As long as you keep a valid license for your copy of 7 I don't see any reason you can't "downgrade" if 10 is not the most perfect OS you have ever seen.

Microsoft said:
This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge.

I think this means free as long as your computer lasts. Security patched as long as 10 lasts.

Its probably best to upgrade if your computer has the necessary requirements, since the security patches are necessary.

I used to Alpha and Beta test for them and this is not a Beta nor is it a RC, Release Candidate, it is a Alpha Test Configuration and there is nothing permanent about it.

How do you do that? This OS was on the machine when I bought it, and I have never heard of having a license for it.

Willie,
Your E Machine may or may not have a MS sticker with the 25 digit alpha numaric code in five groups of five with dashes between the groups. There lies your license access. If you do not have that sticker, no problem. Download Magical or Magic Jellybeans, go to downloads on C: drive and click the exe file you downloaded, get a pen and paper and record the 25 numbers and letters and then, take the removable side, left as you look at the front,e a permanent marker and, very, clearly write that code inside that panel.

You can also go to Rapid River's web site and download the correct x15 or x14 XXXXX iso image and get a nerd like one of us to write OEM in place of Retail and you have a manufacturers copy, ready to burn. Write the code on the DVD twice for insurance and zingo, you're a computer nerd.

More often then not Windows 7 came with an install disk, even if it came loaded on your computer, in the event you needed to restore your computer back to its original state. And every copy of Windows comes with a product key/license number. This is what you enter when you are installing the OS.

If you wanted to change your OS you would normally reformat the hard drive on which you want it then install the new OS.

Now this below is impressive, I like it, and I will be upgrading my 8.1 and I will still be triple booting.

I'll believe it's good when I see it. I've gone all Windows free now. Mac for me, with a Linux machine also. Phone is Android. No Windows. At all. Much better.

Even though I am using Linux more and more, and I am going to get me a iMac I will always keep Windows around. Now when I get my Mac my Windows usage will really shrink but it is still good to keep Windows around.

I'll wait for the finished product to be released. I want security to be reasonably established before using it.

Windows 10 Takes Huge Strides to Correct Microsoft's Massive Mistake
https://www.yahoo.com/tech/windows-10-takes-huge-strides-to-correct-108767403494.html
I hope they have corrected the way they split things up but I still don' t see them getting rid of the Registry and I don't see them pulling the original development files for what was to become Windows 7 that they scrapped when they got so dumb that they ignored all the Techs and Testers and pushed Vista out the door.

If they would pull the hundreds of thousands of lines of code out of the file cabinet and actually extract and use the clean and rewritten Kernel they would move years forward, even without plugging te DOs hole and with leaving the built in Root Kit in place that has been there since the NSA collaborated with them.

But, alas, that would make sense.
