I'm at liberty online. business degree. I'm 30. Should take 2ish years.

Think I'd be better off at tech school? I was thinking...Radiologic technician, but I'm not sure...

Dear Brother, have you ever investigated the probability of being hired in any of the fields of study you're pursuing? For instance, with the nature of the misdemeanor on your record, you probably could not go into law enforcement. What of the medical field; would they fear you coming into contact with their psychiatrists? I have no idea.

Something you may want to consider; I think you said you're on SSI, and regardless of your future lack of income, you would always be guaranteed a place to live, food, and health insurance. I think you can even have a $3000 bank account to buy a TV or whatever. Once you become well enough, and have an income that will support you I was under the opinion you would lose those benefits; always be aware of the pro and cons of your choices. And as usual I'm probably way off on these thoughts. :lol

no, you're not way off. The problem is that I lack work experience, and its hard to get work experience when you don't have work experience. See the trap?

I dunno.

There's many a trap in your options. Regardless the choices you make, your education and experience is only possible if someone takes the chance on hiring you. That seems to be the nature of many seeking work these days. They qualify for one job that soon disappears, and retrain for another that repeats the process. You'll find an abundance of competition for jobs disappearing like never before due to mechanization and technological advances. Make sure the training you receive is something you enjoy so that when it's replaced by a robot, you can turn to the knitting you've learned for pleasure instead of income. :)

Have you ever done any career counseling? That kind of gives you an idea of a career you would fit into well.

Maybe I'll go back into mental health/counseling.

Not ideal, but...for whatever reason, demand is booming.

Anything in the medical field is booming. But there might not be a jobing waiting when you get out.

ugh. there are worse things than being on disability, lol. like...homeless, obviously.

I'm 3-0. Definitely not old, but...it seems like past 25 in my situation, you're not going to be able to do a whole lot. What do you guys think?

That is just not true, many people have been forced out of what they had done for many yrs and have gone into a whole new career at 50!

OK if I were in your position I would pursue business classes and this is why....
If you can run a business that opens many doors to you. You don't have to rely on others for jobs. You can make your own job.
Any number of things in retail books, clothing, cars, etc. I've seen people with skills in several fields try to run their own business and fail not because they weren't skilled but because they didn't know the ins and outs of running a business.
People who do know have even started cottage industries that have grown into larger businesses. But they knew what they were doing and knew where to receive help when they needed it, such as going to a banker for financing, with a good business plan in hand. If you yourself put that plan together it says a lot to a banker. Who knows your business better than you.

True, and...my misdemeanor is set to be expunged after probation. The conviction will still show up on some background checks (lame), but not on others (good). Depending on how long I'm on probation ("5 years" for a misdemeanor in this state doesn't always=5 years, apparently), I might even be able to get a masters, which would increase marketability. Of course, it'd also drive up costs....ugh.

There's hope for me yet!
