Ten Minute YouTube presentation of a TedTalk
by Professor Jennifer Goldbeck (Computer Science)
Play it and listen while you wash the dishes is okay :yes
Or just start it up and then open another browser window to continue 'serfing' here on ChristianForums.
She's easy to listen to. Affable.

Here's a link to the study she cited from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)
http://www.pnas.org/lens/pnas/110/15/5802 <-----I hope that link works, but if not, reply here and I can do a little walk through about how to find the article and use "LENS beta" to view it. Read it later (after watching the TedTalk via YouTube) if you want. The study is like she says, only 4 pages and [fairly] easy to read.

The topic is about DATA and PERMISSIONS. Who OWNS the data we submit?

Oh! I might have put this in the Christianity and Science (C&S) forum (if it were open at the moment) or I could have put it in Current Events, maybe, but I like General Talk, aka 'The Lounge'. Every Moderator here knows they have my full permission to move it. They can edit my posts too, also with full permission.

Heck, they can even insert a bunch of swear words and attribute them to me, I really don't care. They have my permission even though they don't want it. It's all good and I don't have to stand up and demand answers if'n I don't wanna. You can't make me say back if I ain't gonna say back. It won't happen.

So now, if I ever catch virtual turrets syndrome, and start typing out swear words? I'm covered. It was the moderators. You already know.

Professor Jennifer (the TedTalks presenter) taught me a new phrase too: "The sociological theory called homophily." I like sounding smart. Who doesn't? Just use that in a sentence and sounding smart is guaranteed. Sure 'nuff.

Here is the quote of the TedTalk blurb 'bout it:

Do you like curly fries? Have you Liked them on Facebook? Watch this talk to find out the surprising things Facebook (and others) can guess about you from your random Likes and Shares. Computer scientist Jennifer Golbeck explains how this came about, how some applications of the technology are not so cute — and why she thinks we should return the control of information to its rightful owners.

LIKES (more than 55k of them) plus VALUES (a hundred of them) == Prediction Model
(and all that magic is done with YOUR data, voluntarily submitted)

This is legal and there ain't no law again' it!

Ya know, one thing that I just could never seem to figure out in the strange "capitalistic" economy, is how a company (FB) can grow to be a billion dollar company when they don't produce anything, they don't make anything, they don't transport anything, and they don't provide and real services. And yet they where a Billion dollar company before they were publicly traded on the exchange.

How does a company reach a value of a billion dollars without offering anything, except a public forum for you to post information about yourself: FOR FREE.

And people are afraid of Big Brother.

:eek2

It's not Big Brother any longer, haven't you heard the news? They changed that. It's Big Bother now.

how a company (FB) can grow to be a billion dollar company when they don't produce anything

George Orwell might just as well as have written Funny Farm as Animal Farm for all the good it does us.

“Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself.”
George Orwell, Animal Farm
PS, thanks for clicking the link and watching the video. I'll post it again (periodically) just to keep it handy... And as always, thanks for listening to an old mans meandering ways. I do try to stay on topic but that is NOT my strong suite and it's not my strong suit either, go figure.
