Walter is someone I should never have talked to. The sentiment comes from the Lord of the Rings where Gildor Inglorian talks to Frodo Baggins about the black riders.

The quote is referring to Gildor's description of the black riders - the ringwraiths. These are the evil beings that are pursuing Frodo to take the ring of power from him.

It has occurred to me that the book may not be interpreted the same way by everyone. Aragorn, the king, is a good guy, and the elves are too. They provide sanctuary during the quest. Aragorn leads the fellowship until it breaks up over a dispute over the ring.
