I would suspect that just like many "Christians", he knows the words, but does not understand the heart of the author.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe it's the difference between knowing the "Letter of the Law" vs the "Spirit of the Law".

I also think it has something to do with satan's unbelief of what is written.
