Isn't this the very center of the US? on the Continental Divide?

It's close. It's on the Mississippi river, which runs down the center of the country.

The Continental Divide is in the Rocky Mountains. Rain falling on the western side of the divide ends up in the Pacific, while rain falling on the eastern side ends up in the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic.

Oh okay; I see. Maybe it was the historic beginning of the Oregon Trail that started at St Louis, anyway, or something like that.

It was. St. Louis was the jumping-off point for a lot of people trekking westward. Hence the Gateway Arch, celebrating that movement.
