This is informative as well. I didn't know there were at least two separate incidents recorded in scripture of God giving water from a rock, because these are two different occasions...
Also relates to the stone the builders rejected. David prophesied in Psalm 118, which would be quoted by the NT writers:
22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes.…
And....it is living water. Jeremiah 17:13. It would make a good sermon.

And that rock didn't follow them through the desert. Paul says he's talking about a spiritual rock, not a literal one, of which the literal rock only points to. Moses refers to God as the rock that accompanied them in the desert. Paul calls that rock out by name - Jesus.

And at the turn of this millennium Egypt was thinking of placing a rejected capstone on top of the Great Pyramid (Satan's substitute?). There are those who believe the Great Pyramid is IN Egypt but not OF Egypt but antediluvian man such as Enoch was behind its design. The chief cornerstone would only be described in a pyramid as the capstone is both the Chief and only stone that is a corner to all the others. Whether or not one believes this, the point is that a lot of "Stone stories" have come from this biblical concept.

Many gave very good scriptures and will add these ones that speak about the rock in the OT that represents Christ even before He came to earth as a child. Jesus has always been the rock of our salvation, amen

Isa 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Dan 2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

I think the tradition Paul understood was likely not that they brought any rocks with them, but that Christ followed them, bringing water out of rocks in various places wherever it was needed. The split rock at Horeb is thought to be the one pictured below, and would have been too large for transport. And it does seem more logical that the kind of water needed to provide for an entire nation of people would have been substantial, calling for like a river of water running from something large and pronounced.
Anyway, it's just tradition, but this is believed to have been the split rock mentioned in Exodus 17:6:
