[__ Science __ ] “Water Bear” Discovered Preserved in Amber

It turns out, the new fossil tartigrade is rather different than those today. It is not merely a previously unknown species, it is also a previously unknown genus:

In fact, the morphology of the fossil was so perfectly preserved that researchers were able to erect an entirely new genus and species: Paradoryphoribius chronocaribbeus.

It's certainly not unusual for a species to last a few million years, or even 16 million years. As Darwin pointed out, a well-adapted population in a constant environment would be prevented from changing very much, by natural selection. But apparently, it's not the case with this new genus.

"Scientists are baffled!" Well, not this time. These little guys seem to have given rise to more advanced modern tartigrades in the Isohypsibioidea, but there still some work to be sure which supergroup it is ancestral to.
