I started a Phlebotomy course this week. I go 3 days a week from 9-5. Then on May 8th, I start my clinicals at the hospital Mon-Fri. The following week, I'll be at a privte doctors office. Then the 3rd week, I'll be at an Endocronologist office and so on.

Today was our first day to "stick" (that's what we call it when we draw blood). We've only read about hw to do it. We never even played with the needles before today.

I was a nervous wreck. There is one girl in the class and while I was watching her practice on the fake arms, I kept thinking that there was NO WAY she was coming near me. She would end up having the needle all bent and when she put the vacutainer on it, she would jab the needle farther into the arm. Then when she would pull the vacutainer off, the needle would come out.

Two girls went before me. Both went in just fine, but they pulled the needle out when pulling off the vacutainer (tourniquet still on) causing blood to spew everywhere. There was blood all over the table. That made me even more nervous.

It was finally my turn. I ended up shaking so bad towards the end, but I did it perfectly! I was so excited. What a relief!

I ended up being the class guinea pig though because my veins are so big and stick out so far. My poor arms hurt. :(

I ended up letting that one girl stick me and I thought she was going to rip my vein to pieces. The instructor was like "Watch what you're doing, watch what you're doing!". Her problem was that she didn't have all the stuff ready before sticking me, so she was reaching all around to get the stuff while the needle was in my arm. Other than that, she did great. :D

Despite it hurting a bit, it was fun! I'm really LOVING this class. The instructor is really young, laid back and a ton of fun. And with there only being 6 of us in there (5 today), it's nice. :o)

So, I got my first documented successful stick (successful is when we actually get the blood to come out into the tube (vaccutainer)) today! Now just 99 more to go!

Oh my word, I don't know how you stand to do that! And I really don't know how you let them stick you! I'd of been like, "Nope! Not me!" Congratulations, though! I'm glad you're enjoying it and learning a lot! I'm sure you'll make a great nurse!

i love it when ppl actually learn to stick, and do it well

I have had my veins gone through, I have had them missed 2-3 times before getting in, and I even had a lady get the needle in, and then be like "hmm, crap, i forgot the tape to tape it on" and she lets go of it, and it flys out with blood everywhere
lol..

Good job and congrats. Keep up the good work. sticking properly helps alot of ppl out ;-)

We're starting our clinicals next week...ACK!!!

Tuesday I stuck and didn't get immediate flashback. I instantly freaked out and started shaking. I don't know WHAT got over me, but I seriously had an anxiety attack. I have never shook like that before. Ever since then, I'm very apprehensive.

Yesterday, we had a different instructor. He was really good and had me stick him twice. I did a succesful venipuncture and then he had me butterfly his hand. I hit the wall of the vein while doing the butterfly, but he just helped me adjust it a bit in order to get flow going.

Then I stuck a classmate. I'm just so afraid of hurting someone. :(

I only remember having blood drawn once, it was after my NDE. To be honest I'm not even sure what type blood I have. I will only give blood in an emergency situation or if its absolutely required for a physical or whatever. I had a DOT physical a couple days ago and was pleased that they went with a urine test instead of a blood test for the drug screen.

You will get better at it don't worry. The more practice the better you will be :-)

Its sort of creepy iwht all the stabbigns u guys give eachother though lol.

If I pass my ASCP exam, I'd like to get a personalized license plate. Maybe something like BLUDSUKR (blood sucker), NEDLGRL (needle girl) or BLDLTTR (Bloodletter......Phlebotomy was called "bloodletting" when it was first practiced).

Just beware, on a vacutainer, don't force any more blood than what it draws out of a syringe. One of the nurses I was working with today sprayed blood all over my patient. :-D I thought I was supposed to be the one to do something stupid as a student.

I have never had that happen. The vacuum is supposed to stop once the blood fills up to a certain amount. PT/PTT tests HAVE to be filled completely. I leave them on until I'm sure my flow stops. I've never had one spray. Maybe it was a faulty vacutainer that the nurse you were working with had?

I wonder how mayn peopel might ask you if your a vampire, or heroin addict at red lights :-P
I would stick to "BLDLTTR" if I were you :-P

But its a really cool idea. I spent a few minutes thinking of what I could make my liscence palte after graduation, and all I could come up with were things like

G33kB0I
N3RDZ0R
Netadmn
HTMLMAN
not too clever :-(

Maybe just do your license plate in binary code

001010
110100

one of my room mates is a computer dork. He was going to do this for a while. :-D
