A Load Of Garbage

What a load of garbage this is.
Religious people are less intelligent than atheists, study finds

Religious people are less intelligent than non-believers, according to a new review of 63 scientific studies stretching back over decades.

A team led by Miron Zuckerman of the University of Rochester found “a reliable negative relation between intelligence and religiosity” in 53 out of 63 studies. Even in extreme old age, intelligent people are less likely to believe, the researchers found - and the reasons why people with high IQs shun religion may not be as simple as previously thought.

Previous studies have tended to assume that intelligent people simply “know better”, the researchers write - but the reasons may be more complex.

For instance, intelligent people are more likely to be married, and more likely to be successful in life - and this may mean they “need” religion less.

The studies used in Zuckerman's paper included a life-long analysis of the beliefs of a group of 1,500 gifted children - those with IQs over 135 - in a study which began in 1921 and continues today.

Even at 75 to 91 years of age, the children from Lewis Terman’s study scored lower for religiosity than the general population - contrary to the widely held belief that people turn to God as they age. The researchers noted that data was lacking about religious attitudes in old age and say, “Additional research is needed to resolve this issue.”

As early as 1958, Michael Argyle concluded, “Although intelligent children grasp religious concepts earlier, they are also the first to doubt the truth of religion, and intelligent students are much less likely to accept orthodox beliefs, and rather less likely to have pro-religious attitudes.”

A 1916 study quoted in Zuckerman’s paper (Leuba) found that, “58% of randomly selected scientists in the United States expressed disbelief in, or doubt regarding the existence of God; this proportion rose to nearly 70% for the most eminent scientists.”

The paper, published in the academic journal Personality and Social Psychology Review, said “Most extant explanations (of a negative relation) share one central theme—the premise that religious beliefs are irrational, not anchored in science, not testable and, therefore, unappealing to intelligent people who “know better.”
The answer may, however, be more complex. Intelligent people may simply be able to provide themselves with the psychological benefits offered by religion - such as “self-regulation and self-enhancement,” because they are more likely to be successful, and have stable lives.

“Intelligent people typically spend more time in school—a form of self-regulation that may yield long-term benefits,” the researchers write. “More intelligent people get higher level jobs (and better employment (and higher salary) may lead to higher self-esteem, and encourage personal control beliefs.”

“Last, more intelligent people are more likely to get and stay married (greater attachment), though for intelligent people, that too comes later in life. We therefore suggest that as intelligent people move from young adulthood to adulthood and then to middle age, the benefits of intelligence may continue to accrue.”

The researchers suggest that further research on the “function” of religion may reveal more.

“People possessing the functions that religion provides are likely to adopt atheism, people lacking these very functions (e.g., the poor, the helpless) are likely to adopt theism,” the researchers wrote.

I propose those with higher IQ on average are probably see themselves in a more intelligent view and as a result are more influenced by the world and more likely to deny God overall. The smarter we think we are the more we believe we can do it on our own and the less we need God.

I submit the eggheads in question often lack common sense. the truth of the matter is that often what is testable and measured also isn't really used outside of academia.

uh. I do have a higher iq then average and also have that issue at times.

Some people will try or say anything, hoping for agreement by others, to not commit themselves to Jesus.

I agree, I also think the more affluent people become the more likely they are to move away from religious beliefs.

I guess people going through hard times or that can do less through their own strength ARE more likely to turn to God.
Thinking of the Bible verse that says a rich man turning to God is harder than leading a camel through the eye of a needle.

I'm reminded of the Israelites wandering the wilderness after the exodus from Egypt. When things were going well they tended to stray away from God but when things started to go downhill how quickly they changed their tune. In my experience I know I have a tendency to be the same way. When things are going well I don't seem to have my focus on the Lord like I should but man, when things start to go south like when that tornado went over our home in 2002, where do I turn for comfort? Oh, what a wretched man that I am. I thank God his infinite ability to forgive to those who love him.

that study doesn't necessarily mean anything. there are other considerations than intelligence when talking about who believes or not.

Those words Know Better. So what are they saying' is it that they know better than to believe in a God that they can't see. Thou Fools' I see God everyday' when I see the rivers flow' when I see the mountains rise' when I see a dog bark' when I see another human walk past me' when I see a baby born. Even when I see a new invention' because I know that man can't come up with nothing' unless it was in the mind of God first. Thou Fools' The Lake Of Fire Is Waiting.

The title of this thread, Lewis W , says it all: A Load of Garbage.

It's just another way to put down Christianity.

If I had the IQ of potato, I would still be smarter than an atheist, such as Maher. Because I'd be a potato that sees the truth of Christ.

I guess potatoes have better eyes as well.

I mean if you think about it too, nature knows God, for God created it. The psalms speak of the mountains and rivers and stuff worshiping him. So I guess it would make sense that a potato would even praise god.

How pitiful that Bill Maher, Dawkins, and many other self-proclaimed intellectuals are less wise than a potato.

2 Timothy 3 says they are ever learning and never seeing the truth.

I really don't know where I went with some of this stuff. It's 3 am. IQs are numbers. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, and wisdom is not putting tomato in a fruit salad.

The beginning of wisdom is fearing the LORD.

We defeat this evil world through Christ. Believe in Christ and be saved. That's all that matters.

Funny that! In 1 Corinthians v 26 to 29 it says "for you see your calling brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. And the base things of the world, and the things which are despised has God chosen, yes and the things which are not to bring to nought the things that are. That no flesh should glory in His presence" And then we have Psalm 14 v 1 "The fool has said in his heart there is no God".

How is that garbage?
It's just a correlation they found there (and not a rebuttal of christianity!) and it gives reason to speculate for the causality behind it.
“People possessing the functions that religion provides are likely to adopt atheism, people lacking these very functions (e.g., the poor, the helpless) are likely to adopt theism,†the researchers wrote.
Sounds reasonable. Follow-up studies or other reasearch that may already be out there could verify or falsify that hpyothesis. Like, e.g. looking for a correlation between poverty and religion, mental or physical health and religion, satisfying social interactions and religion, marriage satisfaction and religion; and so on.

It's interresting social science, despite the "the intelligent ones just know better" part, and the result itself does not say anything about the truth of God.

'Religion is regarded as true by the common people, by the wise as false and by the Rulers as useful.' Seneca the Younger - around 2,000 years ago!

This 'new' report should not come as a surprise to anyone. It has 'always' been common knowledge that belief is far more common among less educated people. The IQ question is partly a red-herring as some highly intelligent people do believe. The difference is that they recognize their belief as a conscious decision based on facts and probabilities - exactly the same reason that the majority of intelligent people do not believe. Conversely, the less intelligent are, by and large, more suggestible and more willing to be led. If they live in a predominantly religious country they are far more likely to claim to believe - even if they only have the vaguest knowledge of the origin of The Bible, The Torah, the Vedas, the Koran, etc.

To too many people, facts are virtually irrelevant. "I know what I believe, don't confuse me with facts" is something I have heard said in all sincerity, not as a joke. And this gets us pretty close to the real problem. For hundreds of years preachers have 'demonstrated proof' of the existence of God. Sadly, those proofs have gradually been stripped away, leaving us just with gut instinct. Instinct is fine, a perfectly reasonable way to go through life. What is not fine is the ill-educated, the ill-informed and the less intelligent among us ridiculing their betters from a position of ignorance. That simply brings religion into disrepute.

I don't want to turn this into politics but didn't Mitt Romney say, as part of his electioneering last year, that 'college educated people tend to vote Democrat and don't believe in God' ? I can't recall his exact words but he was calling upon the less educated, God-fearing voters, presumably not realizing that what he was basically saying was, "if you are ill-educated or a bit dim, you will vote for me".

they are saying that we christians are stupid compared to people who don't believe in God. And you don't see nothing wrong with this ? Many of us are just as smart as the smartest people on earth. So that is a bunch of garbage.

It's a correlation. They say intelligent people are *more likely* to be atheists. That means there are still smart christians/ muslims/ whatevers and dumb atheists.

Also, the study is about a group of very highly intelligent people compared to just everyone else, that includes the dumb ones, the average ones, and the above average, but not super highly intelligent ones. It's a very high cut-off value. Might be a flaw.

Several other studies have shown similar results, though. Of course intelligence often correlates with access to education and thus exposure to other belief systems, and intelligence comes with the ability and readiness to question one's beliefs. Thus I'd guess you'll find relatively more atheists among the highly educated people. They get exposed to more doubt.
(Although, in countries like mine where agnosticism is pretty much standard and christians are a minority there may be much less of a corellation between education and religious faith. My church is made of scientists, doctors, engineers, teachers and artists, while the working class population is mostly unreligious.)

Though I like the hypothesis of the article you quoted. People with very successfull functional earthly lives just don't have reason to ask and search for God.

Another thought occurred to me. What is the basis for determining IQ? Is it based on Godly criteria or worldly criteria? The basis for measurement certainly slants the outcome.

Some atheists will definitely use the study as something to boast and rag on Christians about, but other than that I do see it as just a study. It matches with scripture, too, if you think about it. Anything that enables you to make it on your own, intelligence, wealth, etc, makes you more likely to think "I don't need God". It does make you more likely to question God, too.
I can actually understand the thinking behind atheism, I think. In the end it wasn't evidence that kept me from leaving Christianity (although I do believe evidence is there), it was God revealing Himself to me. God doesn't want us to lean on our understanding, He wants us to come to Him in need, we need to be in a position where we need Him. For me, that position was a crisis of faith.

What would be Godly criteria for determining IQ?
