Aborting puppies in a dog?

Monday during rush hour traffic, there were 2 dogs wandering in and out of traffic and it's a miracle they didn't get run over. I told myself to ignore them, but I couldn't when I looked in the rear view mirror and saw cars slamming on brakes, yelling at the dogs and honking horns. Nobody was doing anything, so I turned around and pulled over to try and get them. The one took off, but the little beagle was old and looked confused and just stood there. Long story short, I have this beagle now. I took her straight to the vet to see if she was microchipped, but she's not. You can tell she's had numerous puppies, she's old (around 9), her nails were so long that her toes were bending when she stood, and she's got an eye infection. They clipped her nails and we are treating her eye infection. she was also dewormed as a precaution and I'm taking her for a rabies and parvo/distemper vaccine tomorrow. I really do NOT want to keep the dog, but being the animal lover that I am, I can't take her to the shelter (they said because of her age, they will more than likely put her down).

The dog is soooo sweet. We are already in love with her. BTW, we put an ad in 2 local papers, I posted on Craigslist, the Animal Shelter website and Facebook. Nobody has come forward to claim her. I also contacted several rescue groups, but either nobody will take her in or they are ignoring my calls and emails.

If we end up keeping her, I'm torn on whether or not to spay her. One, because of her age, and TWO, because what if she's pregnant? If she's pregnant, they can still spay her and abort the puppies.

What would you do? I have never had a dog that wasn't spayed or neutered and don't even know what to expect or how to tell if she's pregnant. She doesn't appear to be pregnant, but she WAS with that other dog and I keep thinking "what if he got her pregnant?".

Nikki, your vet should be able to test the dog to see is she is pregnant.

If she isn't, then you can spay her.

If she is...then some things to think about:

Beagles are very desirable dogs. They are adorably cute and very intelligent. Even if you don't have papers, you might be able to find homes for beagle puppies. If the pups come out mixed breed, you still might find it fairly easy to be able to find homes for "rescued" beagle mixed pups. Your vet, the animal shelter, Craigslist, word of mouth, etc. can all be of help to you in finding homes for them.

I don't think I could have healthy pups aborted. I just mentioned in another thread that, imo, I believe that the only biblical reasons for killing an animal would be for food, if the animal is a danger to others and, back in OT times, for sacrifices. I guess I also believe that humanely putting an animal down due to suffering illness or injury is OK as well. Heartbreaking, but not sinful

But, to abort healthy pups ... that's a really tough one. I think I would try to exhaust all other avenues before taking that step.

No judgements on you, regardless of what you decide. You're in a tough situation there. I hope your vet can tell you that she's not pregnant! That would be a real relief.

I could live through one litter of PUPPIES! They wiggle, squeak, chew on each others ears... For the amount of puddles and messes the other side is well worth one litter..

I'm afraid she's too old to have puppies. I'm taking her for shots tomorrow so I will have them look at her and make sure she's not pregnant. Since the spay incision is so tiny, maybe she has been and we just can't see it. Both of my dogs have been spayed and we can't find the scar for the life of us! And they have smooth hairless bellies. The only way someone would know they were spayed is because the clinic we had them spayed at tattoos an "S" on their belly.

Nikki, talk it over with your vet. If after he gives her a good examination he thinks she isn't physically capable of safely delivering a litter, then I think aborting the pups isn't unethical.

I know my sister's dog had litters until she was over 10 years of age though... and never had any problems with it. She was a golden lab and her pups always were sold long before they were even able to leave their mother. If the puppies didn't have enough identifying marks, my sister would put little color coded collars on them so the buyers would be sure to get the one they picked out. They finally spayed her simply because they didn't want her to have any more pups.

Different breeds can have different issues though, so I would talk it over with the vet.

Our dog Dolly's mother never had a litter until she was about 10.. Her owner was worried she was very ill... We all sat around the coffee cup he is talking about what her systems were we told Elm she is gonna have puppies he said NO! He had never had a 'heat' problem in the 10 years about a month later she delivered 11 pups then 10 in the next 'season' Then she was fixed.. He has 2 dogs they are sisters and only the 1 had pups... In a town of 50 folks finding homes is not easy... I wish this story was Handy's to tell. She tells a story so well ....

You are saving her? God bless you for such a kind heart. I do something similar: I always try to liberate animals caught in traps.

Animals should be taken care of (mosquitoes excluded)

If she is healthy, she may not have any issues having the puppies. I got a puppy in October, despite being the sweetest, adorable little thing, she is the WORST puppy I ever had, but that is a whole story in itself. She is one of a litter of five born to a daschund mother and a miniature pinscher father. Mom Bridget is 10 years old, she had a hard time during labor and one of the puppies didn't survive. Her owner really had to help her through the process. The owner could have sold the pups for more than she did, $10.00, I guess the Mini Doxie Pin is what they call, a designer dog or a hybrid (2 pure breeds mixed together.)

Having a litter of puppies around is fun and its something to witness the miracle of life. IF she ends up being pregnant and IF she is healthy enough to get through the labor, I'd say go for it, let her have the puppies. I love beagles and if I didn't already have a puppy, I'd say give me one!!

Good dogs polish off every grain in sight and poop everywhere. :lol

Good news....she is NOT pregnant! She is not spayed though. We can't get her spayed "legally" until after 30 days from the day we found her. If the owner were to come forward to claim her within 30 days of us finding her and we had her spayed they could sue us. That is just crazy to me, but whatever.

I got her a rabies vaccine today and a dog tag with my info on it. We are planning on keeping her. She's so sweet. I have posted on every resource and it's been in the papers but nobody has come forward. If one of my dogs got lost, I would IMMEDIATELY do everything in my power to find them. I would be looking everywhere, online, in the papers, calling the vets, calling the shelters, etc.

Good news? Good news! Congrats!

And what name do you even call it, Classik? (If they don't come for her then roadsidedoggyferAbandonedPicked is a wonderful choice)
