2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

vs. 1 is speaking about the tabernacle of God that is within us as we are the Temple of God, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17, and when we physically die we will have eternal life with Him in the New Jerusalem
vs. 2 we desire to be in our new home, the New Jerusalem, that will be ushered down from heaven at the end of days, Rev 21
vs. 3 we are clothed in Gods righteousness as we will not be found naked, Isaiah 61:10
vs. 4 We are the Temple of God, but yet we do have burdens as we still live in this fleshly body waiting for immortality when Christ returns, 1 Corinthians 15:51-54
vs. 5 basic as we have Gods Spirit dwelling in us as we need to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh, Galatians 5:16, 17
vs. 6 we are confident knowing that if we are walking in the flesh we are absent from God because flesh and Spirit can not mix, Galatians 5:17
vs. 7 we walk by faith, which is Christ Jesus as we seek those things from above and not the things of this world, Colossians 3:1-4
vs. 8 we are confident if we are walking in the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) we are no longer following the lust of the flesh, 1 John 2:16

Absent from the body means that we are no longer in the flesh, but now walking in the Spirit having fellowship with God as the Temple of God in heaven is within us as where the Holy Spirit dwells.

For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:1-8

Paul is referring to when we die, and our spirit goes on to heaven, and are with the Lord, awaiting the day when we return with Him at the resurrection and rapture, whereby we are clothed with immortality.

To be further clothed with our habitation, or “tent” that is from heaven.

He said it this way in his first letter to them -

So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:42-53

My belief:
1Thess.4::14
Those that have died in the flesh, will God bring with Him, when He returns.
I believe they are already there.

Like Lazarus and the rich man, Luke 16:19-26
You go on one side of the gulf or the other.
The rich man's hell is knowing that He blew it. Burning from within.
The rich man recognized Lazarus and Abraham, thus had a spiritual body.

As the male factor crucified with Jesus, Luke 23:43, today thou shalt be with Me in paradise.

In Rev.6:9-11
These souls were slain for the word of God, crying avenge our blood...
And white robes were given to everyone of them, and it was said unto them, to rest for a little season, until their brethren be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
They must had a spiritual body.

Thus, absent from this flesh body, spiritually with the Lord.

I do not believe that my mother or father, are lying in a hole in the ground. They will not need this flesh body anymore.
The body returns to dust, and the Spirit returns to God, that gave it.
Ecc.12:7
They have proceeded me. They raised first, and if I am alive when Christ returns, I will be changed in a twinkling of an eye, and be joined with them, when they return with Christ.

Thus, my opinion on "Absent from the body, present with the Lord."

I see all of 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 as:

Motivation of the future presence of Christ

Motivation of future reward

Motivation of the love of Christ

Motivation of the message of reconciliation

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Absent from this physical body is to have the mind of Christ and seek those things from above in the Spiritual realm of God. We are the Temple of God here on earth as being the Temple of the Holy Spirit that indwells us. When we are absent from this flesh we are in the presence of the Lord Spiritually having fellowship with Him here on earth as we are instructed to walk in the Spirit and mortify the things of the flesh that causes us to lose fellowship with the Father.

1 Corinthians 15:44 is talking about the resurrection of the dead which only happens when Christ returns, John 5:28, 29.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 we are caught up to Christ while He is in the air coming in the clouds. Then He will bring us with Him when He plants His feet on the mount of Olives.

Matthew 24:29-31; Rev 19:11-21 Jesus descends down from heaven with His army of the host of heaven as He sends His angels out to the four corners of the earth to gather His own to Him. He will destroy the beast and false prophet casting them into the lake of fire, Rev 19:15, 16. The remnant in Rev 19:21 are the kings (Rulers of every nation) on the earth and their armies that followed after the beast and his false prophet that go out to the battle of Armageddon as this army is sent out to kill Christ when they see Him and the saints with Him return and plants His feet on the mount of Olives, Zechariah 14:1-4.

The remnant, like the beast and false prophet, will be slain by the very words Jesus speaks of their demise and at that time Satan will be chained and bound so he can not interfere with those ungodly that are still alive on earth that become the footstool of Christ. Then the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and He shall reign for ever and ever and the saints will then begin to rule over the nations here on earth, Rev 11:15; 5:10; 20:1-3; Matthew 5:5.

Rev 20:7-10 Those that have rejected Christ that still remain on earth after the beast, false prophet and all the kings/rulers from every nation are destroyed are those who are the numbering as the sand of the sea. These are the enemy of God that Satan uses to battle against the saints that are camped upon the breadth of the earth. Psalms 2:7-10; 110; Ezekiel 36; 37; Rev 20:7-9 the saints are camped not only in Jerusalem the beloved city of God, but also throughout the breadth of the earth. It's only the 144,000 generational Jews that believe in Christ that have returned to Jerusalem. After the 1000 years are fulfilled Satan is set loosed for a season and goes out to deceive the nations as he gathers the enemies of Christ to battle against the saints as the numbering of unbelievers is like the sand of the sea. As the enemy surrounds the camp of the saints God sends fire down from heaven and destroys the enemy and Satan is cast onto the lake of fire.

John 5:28
Reminds me of the spiritually dead as in Ezek.37:10,
Vision of dry bones.
So I PROPHESIED as He commanded, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet.

God's Word brings Life!

Some, dead men walking....spiritually

cant agree with this we have the mind of Christ when we get saved. we have to develop the spiritual mind Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

According to 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 Paul does say we have the mind of Christ.

As far as being saved ask yourself these questions. Has Christ returned for His Bride yet? Has the resurrection of the dead happened yet? Did Jesus not say, But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved, Matthew 24:13? So, no, we who are alive or yet sleep in the grave are not yet saved as the end has not come yet. We are at this time only sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption, Ephesians 1:13, 14.

Absent from the body is to be physically dead.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

JLB

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Think what this is saying beginning with vs. 14.

I read this to say the body without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is dead just as faith without works is also dead.

It's when we put aside this fleshly body, or in other words be absent from the flesh, we are present with the Lord Spiritually walking by faith. If we have no faith then we are absent from the presence of God.

Nowhere in 2 Corinthians chapter5 does Paul say anything about being absent from the body being physical death. What He is saying we are new creations in Christ as our earthly house being the flesh has passed away and we have become new in Christ as we are the tabernacle of God indwelled with His Holy Spirit.

Great points fHg. People do not believe they are not this frail body and that those of us in Yashuah will never die. Folks, including Church Leaders, get all disturbed because I refuse to be distressed because the diseased carcass I am contained in is about to die.

The transition of our bodies is not death for the Christian any more than it was for the Jewish Saints spoken of in Matthew 27:50-60.

As far as being saved ask yourself these questions. Has Christ returned for His Bride yet?
i know what point your trying to make. in this case it will not work this is just scriptures i decided copy from Bible gateway

  • John 17:3 [Full Chapter]
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:19
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Titus 1:2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Titus 3:7
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

1 John 1:2
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

1 John 2:25
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

when i use the term saved i use it in reference==Eternal life ..so if we are absent from the body ..we aint here if we aint here were in heaven

ask your self this on question do you have eternal life ?
1 John 5:13 King James Version (KJV)
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God

another question that i ask many times in a message do you have a know so salvation ..that you know that you know beyond a shadow of doubt you have eternal life..the next breath you drawed is your last one. the next step is eternity. the soul leaves the Body were no longer alive . absent from the body . its appointed unto man once to DIE after this the judgment. so your analogy/ interpretation does not line up with scripture

to make sure my wires are not crossed i read few commentators what they had to say.. i referred back to barnes this is his thoughts :
2 Corinthians 5:8
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
We are confident - 2 Corinthians 5:6. We are cheerful, and courageous, and ready to bear our trial. Tyndale renders it: "we are of good comfort."
And willing rather to be absent from the body - We would prefer to die. The same idea occurs in Philippians 1:23. "Having a desire to depart and to be with Christ; which is far better." The sense is, that Paul would have preferred to die, and to go to heaven; rather than to remain in a world of sin and trial.

To be present with the Lord - The Lord Jesus; see the note on Acts 1:24; compare Philippians 1:23. The idea of Paul is, that the Lord Jesus would constitute the main glory of heaven, and that to be with him was equivalent to being in a place of perfect bliss. He had no idea of any heaven where the Lord Jesus was not; and to be with him was to be in heaven. That world where the Redeemer is, is heaven. This also proves that the spirits of the saints, when they depart, are with the Redeemer; that is, are at once taken to heaven. It demonstrates:

(1) That they are not annihilated.

(2) that they do not sleep, and remain in an unconscious state, as Dr. Priestley supposes.

(3) that they are not in some intermediate state, either in a state of purgatory, as the Papists suppose, or a state where all the souls of the just and the unjust are assembled in a common abode, as many Protestants have supposed; but,

(4) That they dwell with Christ; they are with the Lord (πρὸς τὸν Κυρίον pros ton Kurion). They abide in his presence; they partake of his joy and his glory; they are permitted to sit with him in his throne; Revelation 3:21.

The same idea the Saviour expressed to the dying thief, when he said, "today shalt thou be with me in paradise;" Luke 23:43.

your more than welcome to hold to your belief .but you will be standing alone

I read this to say the body without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is dead just as faith without works is also dead.

There are a lot of dead people who are walking around planet earth, then.

The Lord dwells within us, and we have fellowship with Him, while we live in a body of sin.

When we die, our spirit goes to heaven to be present with the Lord.

Ever notice how we refer to a person that is deceased as the “body”.

The body was taken to the morgue...

They will do an autopsy on the body...

They discovered a body in an abandoned house...

So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Luke 16:22-23

The rich man’s body was buried, but his spirit man, went to hell.

I agree with this 100%, but while we are yet alive physically we need to abstain from the desires of this fleshly body, meaning we are absent from the body which is sinful and present with the Lord in pure fellowship through the Holy Spirit that dwells in the inner man that has been renewed as we now walk in the Spirit of God.

We do not depart from physical death to be with the Lord until He returns and we are resurrected then changed to meet the Lord in the air, 1 Corinthians 15:51-58. When this physical body dies and returns back to the dust of the ground it is only our breath/spirit that made us a living soul that returns back to God who gave it, Genesis 2:7; Ecc 12:7.

John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

All of us who are Christ own have the desire to be with Him, but this will not happen until He returns.

"today shalt thou be with me in paradise;" Luke 23:43.
This verse only means that when we recognize who Christ is and accept Him as Lord and Savior, in that time of acceptance all of us that day will be with Christ in paradise when He returns.
