Advice for a Baby Christian

It can be difficult to fully understand God's Word on your own. Fellowship is important. It's also extremely helpful to find a good pastor who preaches from His Word (you can find many good sermons from Dr. Stanley on Youtube).

The Matthew version of the Great Commission (v 18-20) talks about making disciples. Discipleship was a common and well-understood institution in first century Judea. It was usually one on one, or one on a few (3-4) It was not just informational (transfer of facts) but also life formational. You took on the lifestyle of the one training you.

Such an approach may seem very out of place in our modern western world, but it is the biblical model.
Find someone to teach you.

All I can say is read the Word, and perhaps a study Bible (I recommend the New King James Version) with good footnotes may help. Also any biblical historical book that gives an overview of the Bible may also help. I used to say read thus and such a Gospel first (like Mark), and then Romans and Galatians which were letters from the apostle Paul explaining the faith and giving helpful advice to the Christian life. However, there's no easy way around it where if one just reads the simpler New Testament Scriptures, it is a theology without a foundation. The Old Testament gives the basis and "whys" as to the need of Messiah and His Kingdom. However, as encouragement, the whole learning of God's Word is very fascinating. I promise you will not be bored if you invest time. And on that note, your life will keep changing for the better until as the hymn goes, "The things of the world will grow strangely dim..." because there is so much more glory. BTW, if you read two Old Testament chapters in the morning and One Old Testament chapter in the Evening and One New Testament chapter, (I.e. 4 a day), and read your study notes with each, you can get thru the whole Bible in under a year. If that's too aggressive, then cut that in half and you will be through the Bible in just a little over a year and a half. Not all chapters are the same length. So there's times (such as with the Psalms) you will have short chapters to read and thus get a "reading vacation". Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum.

Advice, the best thing about advice is it's free and you don't have to take it.

That said, how do you grow as Christian?

By getting involved in a church that practices what it preaches.

How did you become a Christian?
Through a meeting, a friend, by reading the bible etc!

If through a meeting or a friend, go back to th3m for advice and help otherwise try the christianityexplored website. In it one can find church that run this course in your area.
Contact them and try the nearest church.

Welcome to the forums Scarmarie :wave2

Best advice I can give you is to first pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you that of what you read in the Bible, John 14:26. Start out by reading the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as this will teach you about who Jesus is and our relationship with Him. The book of Acts will teach you about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to a good word church that teaches truth and also feel free to use the Q&A forum to ask us anything you need help with in the word of God.

God bless you on this beautiful journey of learning and understanding :)

Its easier to understand the Bible when we understand the cultural context of it. It was written to 1st century people and earlier. They percieved the world at the time in a particular way and had certain laws and traditions. Thankfully there are scholars that have studied the ancient cultures, rituals and belief systems, and we can get a grasp on that, and it will help us as 21st century north americans to further make sense of the scriptures and apply them to our lives.

Its not the end all be all, but it helps 🤙

I can recommend a few teachers if you like, but not without your solicitation 😆

Take care Scarmarie

Scarmarie---

My best advice is to continue to thank the Lord that he saved you!! You are now a CHILD OF GOD--A CHILD OF THE KING! You are a sheep CALLED BY NAME. You are one of the LORD'S PEOPLE! Peter says you are now part of a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD!! What a privilege! Never forget that!

Also--remember that Jesus wants to spend time with you far more than you do with him. Here's what Jesus said to his disciples in Mark 6:31: "Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” Set aside some time in the early morning if possible and just read the Bible and pray. But remember that the Lord has promised to meet with you. I would suggest that you start with the Gospel of John. It is a beautiful Gospel. Have you ever put your hand on a pine tree and realized how sappy it was? It is literally oozing with life! The Gospel of John is like that. It is annointed of the Spirit. Not that the rest of the Bible isn't annointed also----but John to me is special. But you can start with any Gospel actually. But the important thing is to get to know Jesus more and more.

David says in Psalm 51 "Create in me a clean heart O Lord". And he will do that if you pray and fellowship with him. And also, as others have mentioned---go to a church of Bible believing Christians and grow with them. The Lord will lead you if you ask him for direction and guidance. God bless you Scarmarie---I'm so happy for you!!

Answersingenesis.org and creation.com and Christiananswers.net are good sites to visit, find links on them and click them, they lead to articles. The articles have clickable titles.

Examine worldview foundations and investigate assumptions.

see where people are coming from and also how they approach things.

Hey Scarmarie :gtingz, you are pursuing what I believe to be the principal ministry of a baby Christian, sitting at the Lord's feet and growing in your knowledge and understanding of Him/His word/the faith, so keep up the good work in His precious Name :thumbsup (BTW, I think that you might enjoy this short story of the Lord Jesus' visit with Mary and Martha as it speaks to this .. Luke 10:38-42).

Another resource that was helpful to me when I was still pretty young in the faith is a 4-part teaching series called, Spiritual Boot Camp. This series takes a close look at four of our most important Christian spiritual disciplines, How to Study the Scriptures, How to Pray, How to Function in the Body (Fellowship) and How to Witness. The series will not only teach you some of the best ways to practice these disciplines, it will also give you practical advice about how to incorporate them into your life/your daily walk before/with Him 😊 (I still use some of the things that I learned from Spiritual Boot Camp in my walk today, more than 35 years later).

Just go here, scroll down a bit, and chose one of the parts of the series to listen to (which is always free to do online now, to listen and/or to read).

You can also find some regular/great online Bible teaching at places like the following,

Renewing Your Mind w/Dr. R C Sproul
Insight for Living w/Dr. Chuck Swindoll
Grace to You w/Dr. John MacArthur
Gateway to Joy w/Missionary & author, Elisabeth Elliot

God bless you!!

1 Thessalonians 5
23 May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body
be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

Not just read your Bible and prayer and go to church but to get with other believers and in the growing in the Lord Jesus Christ is all you can do! As really hope you continue to grow in your walk with Christ! Welcome to the forums BTW!

Welcome to the fellowship of believers, Scarmarie. All of us (including you) that are saved are saved not by our works (good things we have done) but by His grace (divine favor that cannot be earned - it is free). All of us depend on Him for our very existence and for guidance which He gives (mostly through His written word). I can recommend a preacher named Lon Solomon - he is a Jewish believer that has an uncanny gift at making complicated things simple so that others can understand them. Just google his name - He is easy to find. Someone suggested that you find the time to read the scripture (early mornings work well for me) each and every day. Maybe start slow and be patient - there is much to learn. When you seek His word you are seeking Him because in some way - it almost seems magical - God is in His Word. You can get spend time with Him - the Creator of the Universe - and He will begin to bless you and reveal Himself. Try to do this daily and overcome periods of time when you just don't feel like doing it. Be assured that you are in my prayers and if you want to contact me I am here to help in any way I can. May God's rich blessings be on you.
