alcohol?

I hope this is the right category for this topic.

I was reading in another thread and at one point it was stated that the church claims, "alcohol is wrong for a Christian to consume." Is this really scriptural? I've never really thought this to be true. I'm sure any time this is discussed a reference is made to the wedding where Jesus turned water into wine. I also think that if this is true then why does the church use wine during Holy Communion?

I've always felt that used in controlled moderation should be acceptable but I do believe the scriptures are very clear about over-use as it talks a lot about the sins of drunkenness and debauchery.

I can share that I do enjoy an occasional beer or two but I can also say that it has been many years since I recall drinking enough to even sense the effects of the alcohol and the last time I was drunk to the point of difficult functioning has been much longer.

only being a drunk is a sin, but some churches say that even drinking is sin.

The Bible doesn't say not to drink but overall it looks unfavorably on drinking.

Its amazing how lose with the truth church folks become on this issue. Altering the story of the Wedding at Cana to remove alchohol from the wine, truely pathetic.
Its not possible from iether the Oldor New Covenants to support a strict pohibition of alchohol, and I believe that had the American church not spent so much capital on this goose chase a century ago we might not ,in our time, be saddled with abortion on demand, something I believe a strong case of prohibition can be supported scripturally.
With all our righteous indignation I believe we played into the enemy's hand.

I have heard all kinds of stories like that. I have heard that because of the climate in Israel all grape juice would begin fermentation upon being stored and eventually become alcoholic.

I do remember a woman at church telling me all wine consumed in the bible was grape juice only the non alcoholic variety LOL. I think that is a fanciful claim.

If you read in proverbs it is written about mixing different types of alcoholic drinks and how bad it makes you feel one of many many places in proverbs -

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

proverbs 23

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

dont mix drinks and drink too much not don't drink.

it is bad for rulers and people in authority to drink alcohol too much.

I drink alcohol too if jesus didnt want people drinking he wouldnt have made it his first miracle.

Wine in Bible times was alcoholic. They did not have refrigeration and grape juice fermented, becoming wine. The percentage of alcohol was less then than now, as many wines have sugar added.
The use of wine (or any alcohol) should be in moderation. The prohibition in the scripture is against drunkenness, not the drinking of wine.
