Genesis merely says that the Earth (including air and waters) brought forth living things. Nothing about breathing into them. Except for Adam, and that was to give him an immortal soul.

God says life was produced by the Earth, as He willed it to be. Earth can't be dead, since it was never alive. But indeed, God says that life came from non-life.
